I've just collected 4 new (to me) hd springs for the discovery. having just got home and unloaded them I've noticed they are of different lengths i.e. one pair is slightly longer than the other. Which are the front ones, the longer or shorter pair? I'm guessing longer at back, but I'm guessing... any clues please?

have they got little stripes of paint on the springs. If so each color code denotes where each spring goes. look in my font of all knowledge thread to see what goes where.

pretty sure the longer ones go on back if they are slightly thicker defo do..

Pretty sure or 100% certain?? given that his life may depend on it?? even left the front spring is different to the right front spring
there are no markings on the springs. I've got them here next to me. Nothing in the haynes by way of stats. springs are the same in all other respect (thickness of the metal, distance between the coiling... everything) just the height differs. I'm thinking long at the front because of the extra weight (engine, driver etc) but appreciate there may be more carried in the back and thus a need for more travel... hence my dilema. I'll look in the knowledge font.

Thicker coils and/or less coils for the same height indicate a higher spring rate. These will be the ones on the rear.
If you have the same coil count, but different heights then the shorter spring is of the higher rate and will go on the rear.

Long springs go to the front the shorter springs are to the rear.
i've completed the job. Long on the back, short on the front. she sits level and rides well. I've loaded the back too with some tractor weights to see if takes load ok with simulated full people load... all good. thanks all for your time.

hi,
ive just fitted a lift kit supplied by mm4x4. i too had the problem of not knowing where the springs went (the lack of ANY fitting instructions or even labels doesnt exactly help).....all 4 oe springs i took off were the same length, with the kit i got it was long springs to the rear also. it seems to sit ok although what a BA**ARD of a job it was, im not a mechanic but i do fit shockers and springs at work on a regular basis an im not ashamed to say it took me 2 nights after hours at work and around 10 hours in total!!!

It's looking pretty good now and I'm pleased. Sounds like you had a mare of a job. Mine took about an hour for each corner but I borrowed some seriously large axle stands and so lifted the whole thing up. The rears just fell out, fronts took a little compressing. Enjoyed doing it all though.
