Spot lights - 55W or 100W?

yeh, I looked at those, but they are about £10 and as I have 2 switches already I might as well use them, but thanks for the idea.

Regarding the wiring diagram I did on the previous page, any comments on that?
Is it all ok? I think i've done it right, but would like to get people views on it...

Also not sure where from to get the main beam split...

you need a single feed from main beam - worst case is direct from just before the bulb holder if you can't figure where to find it elsewhere - this will feed the relay coil (via a small fuse) and through your over ride switch - the spots are then fed via the relay contacts through a large fuse

email me your paint file and i'll ammend it how i'd do it if you want

I think the circuit below should do it...

If switch 1 and 2 are OFF - nothing happens, spots are always off.
If switch 1 is ON and 2 is OFF - spot lights are always on
If switch 1 is OFF and 2 is ON - Spot lights will only come on with the main beam...

that's a confusing way to do it as you'd be better just using a single +12v feed from the main beam to feed the relay - your diagram shows a main beam switch but no lamp (hacking the loom to do this isnt ideal) - and you could create a situation where the mains will be backfed when you just wanted the fogs on
 
this is how i'd do it - BUT it doesnt have the option to turn the spots on without also having the main beam on

If you really do want to be able to have the spots on without the mains on (why?) then an additional relay would be required

I think I'll just do it like that and forget about having fogs on while main beam is off if that means an extra relay..

Need to go to Maplins to get the fuses as I don't have any at the moment, ho well, something to do on Sat morning…
and then need to find which wire on the headlamp relates to the main beam… suppose they have different colours?
anyone whos done this installation knows which wire is it?

if you really do want to be able to turn the spots on/off indipendant of the mains

hang about there's a better way

I'll have a think on what to do.. the only reason why I would like fogs on with main beam off is imagine I'm out with some friends and they are in front of me.. if I have my main beam on it will be shooting straight on their rear mirror, but if that's off and the fogs are on, maybe the fogs, as they sit higher, won't dazzle them as much?
I'm probably talking crap now that I think about it..because they'll be dazzled anyway, but as I've never tried I really don't know what it would be like...

so, if I go with that second option, all I need is to buy another 30A relay...and some extra cable...

ignore my second diagram, there's a better way once i can work out how to draw it in MS Paint , how retro :) - think you'll find the fogs on their own will be just as bad as the mains, unless your right up their arse (and then you'd not need any lights on at all)

I also used Paint and it's a pain... I got to a point that I was thinking of drawing on a piece of paper and then take a picture and post here..hehehe
 
get the 25A - I find it less fuss to use single if they do it

that wire you have looks about 15 - 20a @12v ish

MHM is the man for this. he'll be able to tell you what colour you should be using as well
 
single? you mean single with 2 cores inside right? well, at least to bring the wire from the spot lights to the engine bay..

multicore (or strand) inside (rather than single strand) but just a single wire - rather than the figure 8 or twin stuff in that maplin link

I have 4 roof lights on one circuit - which can only be used when the main lights are either set on side or main - this way this takes away the problem you are mentioning with having high beam on and dazzling your mate infront as you can run the roof lights with just sides if you like. I don't have 2 fuses in 1 circuit as per the diagram above though - I fuse the power to the relay but not after it. I ground each light individually. I would have thought that if is fused to the relay would be more than enough? I also have illuminated switches incase the extra lights get turned/left on by mistake.
 
one fuse goes in the main feed line close to the souce - the other goes in the main feed line as close to the lights as possible

tis just a safety thing
 
ha ok Sean, know what you mean by multicore but only 1 wire..
will get some of that tomorrow...

did you get a chance to re draw that second diagram to have the option of fogs on but main beam off?
