Tried to separate the steering drop arm from the drag link to replace the dust cover. I couldn't get the ball joint to split from the arm tried using a track rod end ball joint fork but it was too small tried hitting the end of the steering bar with a hammer but no joy! Any ideas, would a threaded ball joint splitter work, or do I have to give in and take it to a garage? :(:(

Yea, ball joint splitter. Halfords sell one that you use a socket on to press the ball joint out, works fine for the drop arm. I tend to put a big nut between the ball joint splitter and the ball joint, as otherwise sometimes it slips off.

your not hitting it right or with a big enough hammer, they will allways come off,it needs to be a proper hit not a girly tap ,hit it right on the end near the joint ball joint splitters only damage the joints

Put a large bar/lever between the steering bar and drop arm, get someone to lever it off while you hammer the drop arm and it will pop off. A few sharp hits with a hammer should do it. Watch out as it will come off with a bang so keep feet and arms clear from under the bar.

Cheers mark

JOB DONE - Thanks for all the advice, in the end I used a jack under the trackrod to put a bit of tension on the joint and then useing a splitter fork and a big hammer gave it some grief. Thanks again for your help. :D
