So I was driving home last night at the speedo all of a sudden dropped from
50-10-0 (bummer)
So when I got home I took the dash out to see if the cable was spinning(300tdi old school :)
But it was not spinning, so I have just ordered a new speedo cable.
My question was is this common to break, iv had a read and it seems they do, does any one know if the gear inside the transfer gets damaged or will it be fine. Was going to change it as I have 265 75 16 on it and the speedo doesn't run true .

The cable is softer than the drive so it's unlikely that the drive in the gearbox will go. You could use it as an excuse to upgrade to a TD5 dash :)

Why do you think you may need to change the toothed drive?

It just sounds as though the cable inner has gone, so undo the gearbox end and see if you can pull it all out.

If you can, then all you have to do is replace the cable drive.

Simples!!

Just thought I would do to jobs in one, fix the speedo cable and chagr the gearing of it to read true :)
