The speedo clock on my V8 2-door Rangie classic has got the shivers.

Here is a photo that is no work of art but shows what it looks like. Here is a photo of the instrument panel

The fuel and temperature indicators on the left side of the instrument panel work ok and I think the speedo cable is also working ok, since when I turn the car off the hand on the speedo clock drops to zero. But the clock is awol: when I am driving the hand bobs up to about 40km and shivers between 30 and 50km no matter what speed I am doing. The kilometer counter is also working as erratically as a drunken sailor. So am trying to figure out:

(1) can this be fixed by repairing the clock & km counter (i fear not)

(2) can this be fixed by just replacing the clock or do I have to replace the whole instrument panel?

(3) will a clock from any other model of Range Rover or Landrover fit in this instrument panel?

(4) if I have to replace the whole instrument panel will one from any other model of Range Rover or Landrover fit on the dashboard and work properly with my Rangie, a 2-door V8 classic with a dashboard that looks a bit like this?

Not sure what to do about this so any advice most welcome

No idea about Classic's but if the speedo is mechanically driven by a flexible cable, that is a typical sign of the cable breaking up.

Oh and your links come up "Not found"

On most cables, the inner can be extracted from the outer. You may then see there are broken strands that cause the cable to catch and release on the outer giving you the shake.
The whole cable should be replaced and it will be vehicle specific I would guess.

Thanks Datatek. Will check. When you say you guess it would be vehicle specific do you mean ie specific for 2-door 1986 Range Rover with V8 3528cc petrol engine, specific to exactly the same design of intrument panel binnacle, or...?

With LR who knows? They seem to change things at random, but if other models have the same instrument panel and gearbox, the odds are the cable will be the same or at least can be adapted to fit.:)
