Aaaaarrrggghh.!

So, the speedo worked. Got the m.o.t. (apparently its not an m.o.t fail to not have a working speedometer. Sounds a bit daft to me) and it packed in again on the way home. So, I thought that it had probably popped off the back of the clock. Error, nope. Dash in bits of course.
Maybe it was curved too tight, and broke. Took the gearbox end off, and twirled it with fingers. Works fine.

What bit didn't I check whilst sorting the gearbox, based on it working fine before? Yup, the drive end of the gearbox. It was rounded for some reason, I never spotted that. Or even expected it... Good job I have a variety of different gearboxes around me. Took the drive off another, older, box, and fitted that. Would have been a lot easier to do when it was on the bench for sure. Lesson learned. Again.

Means I have a spare cable though, yaay, score! ;)

Never know when you'll need it. My garage has a reasonable stock of spares. You gather stuff somehow.

Yep it's amazing on what you have bought and not needed or bought in error in the past, I had a bit of a move round in my garage on Saturday and bought a load of plastics storage boxes inc lids as I am sick of pulling a cardboard box down off the shelf and it falling apart and everything ends up on the floor, anyway I ended up more or less filling a box up with various parts I have collected over the years but the plastic boxes make it more tidy and easier to get at

Very true....when we left englandshire I had to sell, give away, or get rid of a lot of useful stuff. Stuff I had kept for years...or there wouldn't have been room in the van for the house stuffs. Kept it for years, and never used. Get rid of it though...different story. Just need one of them...got one some.......... Oh shee ite.

Them tesco food trays are handy. Every time we gets a delivery, the driver seems to lose a tray or two ;)

Interestingly, it is an MOT fail - there are 3 reasons for rejection;

briefly,

1) No speedo fitted

2) speedo incomplete, clearly inoperative, or, dial glass broken or missing

3) speedo cannot be illuminated

Just after I bought my 109 it had a speedo which was present, and looked fine, and lit up, but didn't actually work, and I needed an MOT. I only earned an MOT fail when the tester took it up the road to do a Tapley meter test of the transmission brake, and saw the needle didn't move from its peg - so, mine fell foul of the second reason for rejection; clearly inoperative. Most cars aren't driven on the road as part of the MOT, and therefore, the operation of the speedo is not routinely checked.

Mine ended up needing a new drive pinion in the speedo housing, and I had a similar run around with poor quality speedo drive ends.

Looking back at the MOT history of mine before I bought it was reading 57 miles on the odometer year after year!

I'm sure its linked to frequently, but, Iound this page very helpful;

I agree with you there...I always understood it was a fail. But both testers said that it wasn't, though one did say that it really should be. Something to do with using satnavs... Yeah. Bollox. :D The conversation stemmed from me saying I would have taken it for mot earlier but was waiting for a new cable, to be told it wasn't a fail. I still think it is....and bloody should be.

I'd rather it worked anyway, regardless of fail or not.

Fully agree.

In fairness to the MOT testers, I imagine that it's one of the rarest used reasons for rejection there are in the book, it wouldn't surprise me if they had never actually used it.

Landy people are natural hoarders:cool:.

In ten years I have gathered that many bits that I might use I have had to make a spread sheet to tell me where they are.
Managed to move a few bits on that I will not need over the years but often spot parts for an upgrade I might do and get them as they are a bargain, then change direction and do some thing else. Have two rear quarter panels all sprayed and ready to fit in my loft along with nearside front wing panel , hopefully I will fit the rears shortly. The front will probably be left in my will.
