Speedo cable two parts

Speedo cables knackered so need to change it.

Why did Land Rover make two piece cables, is there an advantage over having a single cable in one part rather that joined?

Curious to know why before I she'll out on new parts...

I'm talking from a softdash here, but you may find that there is a unit with wires from it at the join, which provides road speed data to the ECU.
 
Hi old fogey. This is an old 90, no ecu :)

Just wondered why they used to have two halves to the cable. I suppose it must have made it easier to just swap the broken half without getting the speedo out the dash.

I think you have probably hit the nail on the head.
Possibly they usually break in the lower section so it wasn't thought necessary to replace the whole cable?
