Hi All,
My basic scanner detected a fault with 'speed sensor A'
Have googled and there is lots of info but nothing clear.
Can someone give me an idiots guide?

There does appear to be reference to it affecting idle which i find odd? (My idle is too low)
My ABS light is also on.
 
If you'd used a Nanocom, Faultmate or even Hawkeye then you might have got more information and there would possibly be an owner of onesuch on here who might help you.

I have had the car for a week so not got around to buying a dedicated diagnostics yet.
Would any of the above give more detail beyond speed sensor A anyway?

Question is only an hour or so old anyway, so not giving up yet.
 
I take it this is a petrol car. Basic ODBII scanner will read some engine data. But you can do nothing with the ABS unless you get a proper dedicated unit. Like Nanocom which will deal with everything you need plus give more info on faults.
 
Shop around, there's more than one and there's also second hand. Most common are Nanocom and Hawkeye. Nanocom has a few more functions but is locked to your vehicle's VIN. Hawkeye is unlocked, cheaper to buy but doesn't have a couple of the more esoteric features. Testbook is another, used by dealers and sometimes available second hand. Autologic, also used by dealers, is very expensive but I've found at times when nothing else will connect, as can happen when there is a serious problem, this one somehow always does.

I think its the faultmate thats VIN locked. Nanocom will work on any car but only with the modules you've chosen. So if you buy the EDC Nanocom it won't work with a V8, but it should work on any diesel. Someone correct me if I'm wrong :p

Nanocom is not VIN locked and it will do a re-sync, Hawkeye will not do a re-sync. You get one engine type as standard with Nanocom, the other 2 types can be added for about £50 each, it will then cover all variants of the P38.
 
Thanks guys for all the tips. Have the feelers out for a deal on one of the recommended units.
Also took it to be MOTd today and tester was off sick so they offered a free diagnostics and block test for my possible overheating problem when i bring it back next Friday. Result?
That will help and give me time to find one of the above.

They are ok where I go to be honest but only want the diagnostics done anyway as I fancy having a go myself. Bought it as a project.

Sensors should be easy ... They gasket not so?!

What do you mean "gasket".

The P38 speed info is gathered from the ABS wheel sensors and then processed via the ABS ecu and BECM,which may well be the reason your ABS light is on.
I doubt if a low idle has anything to do with this:confused: fault.
 
I have two problems, possible head gasket and abs problem. Agree not related but getting them both looked at the same time.
I noticed one sensor on the front looks really new.
 
ABS light on all the time is a MOT failure
but if it goes out when car starts moving foward that is normal

Its staying on unfortunately. Hopefuly its just a sensor. Its working out which one which is tricky but will know Friday I hope.
Plenty to be getting on with elsewhere on it until then.
Climate panel is all lit up and pressing buttons on it has little effect so having a look at that today.
