I'v just started to rebiuld my front axle and come up to my first hurdle. The bolts that hold the swivel housing to the stub axle are different to a normal bolt, these are multisided, a 14 ml. ring spanner fits, and this undid about half of them but just turned on the others, before I ruin the rest of the bolts can anyone tell me what spanner I need to remove these bolts?

Dont think you mean the stub axle, do you mean the axle to swivil bolts on the back of the swivil? Ive always got them off with a ring spanner, i dont think you can get a ratchet on it, and ive never seen a special tool. Just clean them up and get the tightest spanner you can on, perhaps it imperial, i cant remember what i used, but 14 rings a bell. leave them to saok in WD-40, then get the spanner on under pressure and see if you can tap it with a small hammer, i find thats the best technique to free bolts. Put a bar over the spanner and its easier on the hand also. :D

Oh, and dont forget to put a half shaft seal in the back of the new swivil befor re-fitting it!:doh:

when i stripped an old axle i had to weld a bar onto an old spanner to get them undone, they were super tight. its diffo 14mm cos i still have it just in case!

nylocs? They are just bolts or an i missing something? And do what what with a chisel?
Get a well fitting bihex spanner give them a tap undeme with a hammer and endo them you may find you can only undo them so far with a spanner as they are tight against the swivel use yous fingers or mole grips to get the last few threads out if tight replace with new ones and loctite or just loctite if they are good if they sound off its a bastid so get buy steal a spanner that is a good fit

thanks for all the suggestions, 14 ml spanner is the one but three of them have rounded off, 9/16 is too big and 1/2 is too small, resorted to trying to turn them with big hits of a hammer and chisel. still not moving so might try to weld a bar on and try to turn them that way if the weld doesn't help the heat might. I will keep you informed.

If you in the market for a new set of spanners, buy yourself a set that is "surface drive," many of the better brands do them. they differ from normal spanner in that they apply pressure to the edge of the bumps on the nut/bolt head, as opposed to the sharp corners. you'll never have a spanner slip, or strip a bolt head ever again with these, and the work a treat on Bi-hex as well. had mine for about 20 years now and never had a bolt they can't undo, even bolts with stripped head that normal spanner has rounded off they will grip on.

Thort it was 1/2", maybe just seems too small coz of all the hardened gunk on em, i remember having to tap it on with a hammer but it fitted.
