My son bought this the other day for me for spare parts and for him to use as a Dog Training Prop, DONT ASK.
Anyway been told a couple of times its some kind of Special Edition, looked it up and its called Safari.
The PO has done some work on it, just had head skimmed ect. done a little bit of welding but it needs more in the usual places. When I've finished my Defender rebuild I was planning to do my Disco, so now have 2 to make one good one. But now not sure whether to focus on this one.
Anyway My main Question here is what's so special about it. ?

Not a lot. It’s the last of the special additions that LR did with the D1.
So it’s a GS then adding such things as the ES front spoiler with fog lamps plus sunroofs, and a few other things that were then on the option list for the GS in 1998.
The snorkel, rock sliders are owner additions as is the D2 headlamps fitted to your vehicle.
Plus you have a badge in the side. :)

Wow Worth it for the Badge alone. :D

You don't say how many miles it's done but a GS is like an anniversary except for the lack of leather interior and maybe it does have sunshine roofs. Should have A/C. I'd love it, if I didn't have two already!
300tdi just needs a sports exhaust to make it perform a tiny bit better while not affecting mpg, gets rid of the bog-down on take off from stationary.
Nice one! "Never look a gift-Disco in the mouth!"

80K - it was in his other fred ;)

Tick. That was in his other fred anorl .... - do keep up :p ....... :D

Oooh  - tell me more of this wizardry - this is exactly what SWMBO's manwel does - I'm confident the FWIC, Mr ZF and an appointment on a rolling road will cure it ... but all info gratefully received :)

Oh feck never realised there was another fred on this.
Mine is a Manuel too. For once I bought an official stainless, larger bore, single box, sports exhaust from a LR garage near me. Fitted like a dream (by me) and gives more low down torque. Not too expensive and obvs never needed to replace it. But sorry never asked the name/manufacturer or owt.:( Just had a quick google and cannot find one like it. Seem to remember it wasn't cheap about £150. Think it had a flexi, obvs no cat and single rear box. Only slightly louder than the standard one. Looks like I was lucky to get one when I did, might need to be a bit bespoke now. Tried removing the centre box on my auto Disco td5, changed nowt else and it made absolutely no difference at all.

Before getting what I got I looked into Vortex boxes. they look good but they are pricey, so I went the other way.

Ah! I've seen them on the web, and IIRC, in one of the classic car mags .... seemed a bit snake oil ish to me - without an explanation .... and as you say, they are not cheap....

I did ask them straight out what sort of increase I could expect in fuel consumption. They said "10 per cent" which is what I got with the one I bought, so I was happy.:):):)
There are explanations around and cutaway pics etc. works on the basis of introducing a vacuum in the exhaust flow, bit like the flow over and airplane's wing to help exhaust move out faster. (Quote from their website.)
"Vortex’s patented exhaust technology uses wasted energy, in the form of exhaust pressure, to accelerate gas over a profiled shape, creating a vortex. Acceleration of the gas flow creates low pressure in front of the vortex, resulting in a vacuum effect. This low pressure allows the engine to evacuate exhaust gases efficiently in front of the vortex and acceleration of gas behind.

The effect of scavenging the exhaust gases in front of the vortex allows the engine to breathe freely with little or no gas leakage back in to the combustion chamber, allowing cleaner air into the cylinder for more complete combustion. The spiralling acceleration of gas out of the system ensures no further build-up of back pressure occurs, resulting in:"......Blah di blah di blah.
Think they probably work but not sure the extra is worth the much more serious expense over proper headers and a through silencer, in a wide enough bore, not too wide, which is a mistake commonly made. :)
