Hi all, I have a D2 with an upgraded sound system but not the Harmon Kardon system. It's a philips one I think. I have the amp under front passenger seat and two 6.5" subs in boot which are terrible so those are being replaced when I can find out a good alternative. If anyone knows of a good replacement sub for these please shout.

Also I am considering changing the front door speakers which aren't bad but I might upgrade to crisp up the sound a bit. Was considering just going for HK used ones like these https://landroverusedspares.co.uk/audio/Discovery-2-Td5-V8-Door-Speakers-XQM000260-Harman-Kardor
but again if anyone has upgraded theirs and can recommend a make/model of speaker to drop straight into the doors, let me know! thanks

PS, I have googled to death. Does anyone the exact specs of the original subs? Mine are Philips 6.5" overall diameter and on the back the sticker says :

PHILIPS 4304 078 56821
08.04.04-6-01-5A

Mainly I am interested in the wattage. I don't want to blow my amp or screw anything else up, but it would be nice to get some replacements which do have the correct wattage so I am getting what I can out of the amp. thanks

I told you the loudspeakers you require to replace the existing tailgate fittings in your thread on a Parrot car kit, what it didn’t say was make sure the replacement have the threaded hole in them that’s identical to the existing item so u can easily reattached the sub amplifier.

Memory like a sieve here sorry. Although I am not sure you have the right idea there. I don't know what you mean by threaded hole, and I don't have any amp to reattach. There is no amp in my tailgate, only under front passenger seat. Maybe you're thinking of the Harmon Kardon system?

This one? https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-ro...-parrot-kit-interference.359016/#post-4853522

I have got confused because you said they are normal speakers, but they sure don't sound it. They sound like they are playing under water! But all the other threads I read said they are not normal speakers, they are subwoofers. That would explain the muffled sound. I was thinking I need two subwoofers but if you're sure I don't then I can go for standard speakers.

Beware the standard speakers are all 4 ohm resistance & very efficient (High output per watt of input dB/W) - which is very rare in aftermarket speakers. Fitting some aftermarket standard 8 ohm speakers will often result in inadequate volume from the aftermarket units compared to the standard speakers at low volume levels.
On our D2 I fitted a powered sub-woofer in place of the standard 2 sub-woofers in the rear door. Big benefit is the output is adjustable relative to the rest of the system - so you can balance it up how you like.

PS the speakers in the ebay advert are very inefficient at 85dB / W. I think the standard speakers are somewhere around 95 dB/W so the ebay ones will be much quieter than the originals

Thanks Pawl. Interesting, and complicated! I am not looking to go overboard and I definitely don't want to go downhill so that efficiency issue is good to know. Maybe the best thing would be to just get some good condition used Harmon Kardon speakers out of a D2, at least the specs should be bang on?

The most important job is the subwoofers in the boot. I have no idea what I can use to replace them now, and all used ones will be old and knackered. Do you have any suggestions for replacements just to drop straight in?

Ok, normal as in that’s what they are in shape and importantly size, it’s just that they have the capacity to handle a lower frequency.

The tailgate amp would have been fitted as standard on the high end models and on some mid range if that option was requested. So where’s yours gone? as the loudspeakers fitted to the amp with a single screw, did your disco leave the factory equipped with a fully functional sub or has the two loudspeakers been added later without the amp... hence the poor sound from them u describe.

I remember the The Biglad a few years ago install two replacements that were a straight forward fit and had an impressive sound also each had a threaded hole for fitting to the amp, the forum thread will still be there, but will take a bit of time to search his posts. :)

I am really confused. I haven't seen a single thread (or photos) which make mine look aftermarket. I definitely have an upgraded sound system from factory. CD changer under driver's seat, amp under passenger seat. Tweeters etc, and subs in boot. I am certain it is all standard. The subs do make sound, and it's mainly bassy sounds so maybe they are working fine and I just want to improve them. Without comparing to better/newer ones I can't say for sure, but it's definitely all working. So as to this amp in boot, maybe I do have one? Where would it be?! I took the pod off the rear door, grill off, then screws to remove plastic surround, then it all came out with the two Philips old factory subs. I ASSUMED the subs got their audio direct from the amp under the passenger seat, now I am scratching the old nog!

Either way, I am pretty sure if I just stuck in 2x 6.5" subs (of the correct specs which I am now not sure of!) it would work. I do want to find out if I have a second amp though, were they inside the door somewhere? I can go have a look through the holes the speakers sit in, not near the vehicle at the mo though. thanks!

I have already read that thread cover to cover, I don't see how it helps.
My speakers were producing sound. They are definitely factory fit as this vehicle was owned by a LR rep from new, and sold to a friend after that who had it until I bought it. It's entirely original. I don't see any amplifier in the pod I took off the boot. If you have a photo of what this tailgate amplifier looks like that might help, as would telling me where it is fitted if you know?

Found this from another Google search showing the amp attached to the loudspeakers.
If you don’t have something similar then i can’t help u with the sub amp.

There was no amplifier on the speakers in the back of ours (High Line amp equipped) or the vehicle I removed another speaker trim from.
Why would there need to be , when the main amp has separate outputs for every channel ?

It gets curiouser and curiouser!! Nope, not got one of those on back of mine either. Seems very odd but I know others have it as NOW I finally understand that "Bassssy" thread linked earlier!!! I read that wondering what the hell he was on about regarding the amp behind speakers! I just assumed he was more into his ICE than me and had previously fitted something to boost the back end bass. Interesting!

But yes, I can't see why that would be needed with an amp under passenger seat. Is there any chance this was a factory option, i.e no amp under seat but an amp and bass woofers in boot for a slightly better sound with the full premium amped system?

If nobody minds....has anybody got a wiring diagram/info for this amp, just the +12 volt pin would do. I've got one of these amps that came out of my 1998 300TDI. It must have had a DC offset problem cos the drive units were welded solid.
Thanks in advance to,anyone who can help.
