Series 2 Spare wheel on bonnet ?

Hi guys
I'm not a big fan of spare wheels on bonnets but i'm trying to make some room in the back of my 2a swb and don't want it on the back door, the bonnet was on the landy when i bought it with a spare wheel bracket fitted to the bonnet but no spare fitted as there was a few spare wheels loose in the back, so today i decided to try it but i'm not sure as the 235 x 16 Cooper Discoverer STT tyre looks to bit on the bonnet

That's the door touching it when fully opened i keep saying i will make a strap for them as i messed up and bought S3 door bottoms but its a late 2a with the tubes on the bulkhead

Have you looked at the side mount type.
Somebody here did it and it seemed to work well but sorry can’t remember who it was (@v8250 was it you?) or the tyre size, but that on the bonnet looks far to much TBH.

I would use a standard skinny series wheel and tyre as a spare.
Weighs less too, so easier to get on and off.

I guess if you have an accident it might be a factor to be investigated, it’s wider than original equipment

a few cases of obstructed windscreens if you google it

Yeah i've been toying with the idea of fitting the spare on the side ( inside ) over the left hand rear wheel arch behind the left front seat and was thinking of making a mount but i've never seen a side mount before

Side mounts are like the bulkhead ones.

109/110 truck cabs had these but the also had a 1/2 moon for the tyre to fit in.
Hi caps were also side mounts but sat on the arch.

Could you use an old disco carrier?(modified)

I had an inside mount on my old 109.
Long time ago but from memory there was a wheel shaped well rivited into the nearside wheel box which the spare sat in. A bracket bolted to the capping held it tight.
Probably no room in the wheel box for that in a swb though.

Back mount looks wrong on a series, bonnet mount pita for engine access, bloody heavy to.
Sure someone was making a mount so the wheel could fit to the inside of the roof? which is a dead space in most series/defenders.

Leaning towards a side mount now but will need to offer wheel upto the side and see.

I drove a 2a for many years with a 750x 16 on the bonnet no real problem. Some one did some tests once and found a bonnet mounted spare improves the aerodynamics of a series.

I did once look into using the 109 half moon spare holder in my 88 and recon the tyre wold rub at full axle movement. If fitted in a slightly raised position it could work.

I read about those tests and I believe they were carried in South Africa .

Oh, I thought the last one looked like the beginning of “buy Toyota” . Now I see the first letter is a “J” not a “T”. Are you sure it is not “Jimny”?!

My 235 85 tyres rub on full articulation as it is

Is your bonnet the dished one, I be some bonnets with the spare wheel bracket fitted but they weren't dished. The dish shape helps secure the wheel and keeps it slightly lower. Series do look good with the spare on the bonnet but it becomes a pain in the arse if you need to lift the bonnet regularly. They are also quite heavy things to lug onto and off the bonnet. If my paintwork was anywhere as good as yours, I wouldn't put the spare anywhere near it.

Well he likes them to mainly as an off road toy he likes landy's but would look at a V8 disco which I'm steering him towards

Yeah I've just sat it on there but as most have said looking through the windscreen it's a bit tall, the bonnet is a std S3 bonnet which was on the landy when we got it and it's not dished but tbh I'm leaning towards the spare being on the side now
