When the landy is back on the road I'll have to replace the rear mounted spare wheel carrier. The current one was bolted to the rear cross member, cappingand the door. Therfore removing the strain from the door.

I'm thinking that the new one should not attach to the door at all, ie one of the ones that locks open and closed.

Paddocks sell one as does someone on fleabay but can anyone recommend one?

The one sold by Paddocks that you are referring to (about £105?) is the Pivlock made by Bullivant Engineering.

I had one on my S111 SWB V8 back in the 1980's and it was an excellent piece of kit, it carried my 9.00x16 spare without problems including lots of off-road work. They are basic but work very well and the fact they are independant of the door means that if you want to you can swop between safari door & tailgate as the mood takes you (I did this often). They are completely silent in use, the only problem being that if you don't keep the rubber buffer compressed against the door wear will quickly form in the locking groove which will rapidly get worse, ensure the buffer is shimmed up (about 5-minutes work every 12-months or so) and you won't have any problems at all.

Just be aware that you are unable to open the rear door without the carrier being opened first so if you carry passengers in the back then it is not the right thing for you as they will be unable to get out in an emergency.

I think the type of swing away that is fixed to the rear door is best. Just one action to open the door. Otherwise you have to swing away the spare, then open the door. Solves the problem of passengers in the back being able to get out in an emergency!!!:scratching_chin:

Has anyone fitted a Discovery wheel carrier on a Defender rear door.

I'm sure my mate has, as long as its bolted properly theres no reason why it wouldnt be as good as a defender one, because the disco rear door is slighlty curved then it may need straightening before fitment

Thats a very good point, im sure the mantec ones are on a runner so it swings as you open the door, but the mantec's are £200

You could go for the Allisport one though it's expensive. I have one from Nakatanenga in Germany and it is mounted onto the crossmember though it opens and closes with the door through the use of an adjustable arm.
