Do,s anyone know if there,s a difference between the carrier for the rear door and the one for the bonnet ? im thinking of changing mine to try and save damage to the door ... vision is not a problem as i don,t use wide tyres and have raiser bars under the drivers seat (yes im a short arse)...:)

Not sure if the fittings are different, but would expect them to be

I have a carrier on my bonnet but with no wheel on it.

Threads indicate can impact forward vision, makes the bonnet VERY heav to lift, and you have to remove the wheel to lift the bonnet right up

Original bonnet with wheel carrier has a different (stronger) retaining rod as well.

You might be better with a swing away wheel carrier at the rear - loads of threads on that

Thanks . maybe the swing away carrier would be the better option !!!

Just had a look at mine

The rear and bonnet carriers look different - not sure that they are interchangeable
The original idea was to put the spare wheel inside behind the seats but as its a work vehicle that would mean climbing over tools ect to get it out ! hence the idea of the bonnet.

Bonnet mount is bad. 2 of us had to lift the bonnet coz it's too high to get enough leverage to overcome the weight of the bloody thing. Visability is bad as mentioned. Removing it was the first thing that I did when I got my landy back home.

Bonnet & rear door carriers are completely different. Apart from the differences in the carriers themselves the bonnet kit also includes the mouting pads and the strengthening bars for the underside of the bonnet.
Bonnet mounted wheels are fine depending on your build and the size of the wheel/tyre being carried. When I was running 7.50x16's it wasn't a problem, I could lift the bonnet ok and the tyre was narrow enough to let me see over it ok as I am quite tall. When I changed to 265/75x16's it was a different matter, I could still lift the bonnet without any problems but vision over the top when moving into tight parking spaces could be restricted, for my wife (who is shorter than me) it meant she couldn't see over the top at all.
A swingaway carrier is the best, had the one on my 90 for over 10-years now and used one on my S111 for many years before that. When I used to use directional tyres (XCL's) I carried two spares, one on the bonnet and one on the rear carrier.

Just to throw my tuppence-worth into the mix.

I took the carrier off the rear door and mounted it to the bonnet with no problems at all. I've got an early Ninety which has the stronger bonnet anyway, so it was just a case of drilling some holes and bolting it through. The rubber bungs which the tyre sits on are available seperately for a quid or so each.

However, once I changed to bigger wheels and tyres, it was a bit of pain trying to look over the spare, so I bought a swing away carrier (which I probably should have done to start with!)

"which has the stronger bonnet anyway"

Even early bonnets have strengthening bars fitted when fitted with the correct wheel-mounting.

Hi, Just to add my little bit, My 90 had both a rear door mount and a bonnet mount. but I took off the bonnet one to fit chequer plate on it, they are totaly different, The bonnet fitting is sitting in my garage, if your looking for one PM me.
