Spacers ?

Dear All,

I’ve whipped the wheels off the lad’s 1993 L-plate 90 200tdi, and have them taken off the callipers, in advance of a vented disc and new callipers.

Then I’ve taken off the dust-cap, circlip, and thrust washer, loosened the 5 bolts, and realised, like an utter dummy that it doesn’t look anything like the Haynes manual....



Just so that I’m reassured that I’m not going mental, is this just a spacer ? Or have I got some cobbled together transition set up from the factory ? If it is just a spacer, does anyone have any tips on getting those 27mm nuts off ? They seem threadlocked to death.

There also appears to be an end stop behind the thrust washer (second picture) which I have not seen in any of the books. Any ideas on how to remove this, or will it just tap off when I pull the driving member forward ?

its an after market spacer ,spacer nuts need thread locking as nuts on passenger side front can come loose,you can leave spacers on if you can get drive members off
shim will come with drive member or before

You are a legend, and all round good egg. After feeling completely beaten, and not just a bit f-ed off, I had a couple of pints and watched the last twenty minutes of the rugby, then picked up your reply.

A bit of patience, a flat head screwdriver, and a couple of taps with a 4lb hammer.

If it were mine, I'd be taking the spacers off and putting back to standard unless you have a specific requirement for them.
It's a mod and the vehicle insurer will need to know

I think I might, Kermit, but I’m thinking it’s going to be red loctite, and I’m probably going to need 550 degrees plus of heat on each of the ten nuts, and even then I’d not be sure I could get the bad boys off. Unless you’ve got any recommendations, which would be gratefully received...

I don't have experience of red loctite, but I've heard hot air guns can work, failing that, a blowlamp should work a treat without damaging anything

Buzz gun should get them off and some plusgas.

No harm in them being fitted just inform your insurance.

Spacers put extra strain on the steering and suspension components and could affect steering.
If they put the tyre past the bodywork then you need arches to be road legal

wheel nuts back on and a crow bar between studs and against the ground to stop the wheel from turning, then you just need a 3ft breaker and a long scaffold pole. Even with loctite they should come off with a long enough bar. failing that a proper impact gun should do it.

Either undo or shear, either of which would work in this situation. new studs will not break the bank: Link

Thanks for all your help.

In my 50 years on this earth, the last 40 of them tinkering with cars and bikes, I had never come across Plus Gas ! Brilliant stuff, when paired with a 600 mm breaker bar, and an overnight soaking.

The spacer has come off, but it’s clear I will need to reuse it, as the ZU alloys I’ve got for the truck will not clear the driving member without it.

Next difficulty will be drilling out the 5 snapped m10x45 bolts in the hub on the other side, that I sheared off. I don’t know my own strength...

Honestly, you lot are brilliant. I love being on this forum.
