I know what you all are thinking, 'ha ha, very funny, you got us....no way would Saint.V8, a lover of the RR and V8's go and buy a diesel Freelander.....yeah, right whatever mate...'

But it is true, here is my trademark oil tanker anchor chain bracelet next to the Freelander handbook, and New Keepers supplement of the V5C...

So, now you know I have bought a 20 year old, Diesel Freelander......

Lets begin to address things shall we......

As some of you will already be aware.....we had an L322, P38, 110 and a Bimmer.....Well the 110 was sold a couple of weeks ago, and we miss it already, but the money had to go back to my dad as I owe him a shed load. The P38 was sold on the bay of E and in typical fashion, the winning bidder messed us around and never bothered to complete the sale. So we had a reprieve and we still have her....for the time being.

So that left us with the L322 - Girlfriends daily, and the baby Bimmer - my daily.

The Baby Bimmer has for the last few weeks been leaking oil into the coolant meaning I am constantly flushing the cooling system through and replacing the oil while I figure out the best course of action.

20181111_125011_small.jpg

Well, on Tuesday night just as I was going home, the Baby Bimmer decided to sh!+ the bed.....

And now just grinds, clans, clunks then gives up, trying to drive it is impossible and as such after much goooooogling and talking with my Bimmer friends, the engine is kaput, and the car ain't worth much more than scrap value on the weighing scale.

So I phoned my sister and she kindly lent me her Mini All4 Cooper S (Which is pretty fast with its supercharged engine) but is sooooo not my cup of tea, and I can't borrow it indefinitely and another car is needed.....

I begin trawling through the 'trader, bay of E, Gum Bush, classified, free-ads, etc etc after much thinking, soul searching and looking, the girlfriend and I decide that this is the last time we can keep changing cars about and this purchase will be a long term thing so it would have to be something I am fully happy with, be perfect for my needs, be something I understand and not something that I will drive for 3 months and get bored with only to look to change it again.....

So the search for another E38 7'er Bimmer began, but it would have to be a 728 as running another V8 would not be financially viable....with the kids and everything else.

When we began going through and shortlisting things, a decent 7'er was out of the price range as the E38's are rising in value as they become collectable and are, let's face it' the best looking 7'er they ever made and people clamber for them....

Resigned to either having a real dog of a 7'er Bimmer, as the good ones are out of our reach......we started looking at fast 3'er Bimmers instead (328, 330 etc).....but we both decided that the 3'er is just to small to be happy with long term. Today as with both sat down and began to really hone it in to the search of vehicles in our price range in the local area and something I would be happy to live with in the long term (3+ years sort of term before I get a hankering to change) we started at A fro Audi and finished at V for Volvo......and despite a few 'alright' 3'er Bimmers and a couple of 'so so' 5'er Bimmers - ther ewas one car we both kept going back to for pretty much the same reason.....

The little 3 door Freelander...

Freelander_003a.jpg

We discussed it, we um'ed and ah'ed about it....and we picked up the phone to the dealer.....still available? yes, a couple of niggles - fine no probs.....can we come and see it after we pick up our daughter from school?.....yes, great.

So off we jaunt, and almost instantly I thought, yes, this is it, this is the one....this is what we need.....it is almost perfect for what we both want.....price is reasonable, the vehicle condition is very nice, engine is clean, inside is clean, mileage is good at 126k for a 20 year old car, only issue is the EML is on and it is down on power - no, probs the price is good with a bit of haggling and if we can get it at the right price, there is a bit left over to sort out a few minor EML issues.

We talk it over, she says would I be happy to buy a Freelander? Would I get a lot of stick about buying a Freelander? How would the forum react to the mighty Saint.V8 buying a Freelander? Can we see the Freelander being a long term choice?

To answer that is was:
Yes, I am happy to buy the Freelander.
Yes, I would get a lot of stick for buying a Freelander.
The forum would erupt at the news of me buying a Freelander - a 6'3", 24 stone, Gun weilding, shovel handed, V8 Range Rover obsessed Gorilla buying a Freelander would give cause for people to question the laws of physics and sanity.
Yes, I can see the Freelander being a long term choice for me.

So, I bought her the Freelander.......

And I get my L322 back.............

And you bunch of little feckers thought for 5 minutes I had bought MYSELF a Freelander - shame on the lot of you.....:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

boll*cks.

We all have our dreams in life. Something material we've always wanted. For some the dream never happens. But for the lucky ones it does.

It's no surprise having looked at so many other options yer both kept thinking about the Freelander. Tis a pocket range rover that dun't break down daily. Comfort, style and go anywhere ability for a fraction of the price. And its gets betterer than that. Yer won't need to feed it so many parts each week anorl.

Ignore the others takin the p*ss. They dun't like anyone to know they drive a Freelander anorl. It's just their big freelander costs a lot more to buy and run.

May I wish the three of yer a long and happy future.

I'm starting to worry about you and this gel obsession. You're not.......

I hardly think Ant has been dreaming about Freelanders overly, unless they were contained within a nightmare.

Needs must Ant'
It's a very sensible decision that works well for all parties.
If its in such good nick after 20years it has probably never seen hard usage and is just "nicely run-in". :D
