I have the Facelift version of a 2005 Freelander and this is the second time the rear window has given me problems in less than a year of ownership. Last time it stuck in the down position, and a local dealer replaced a switch. All okay, worked fine but never tried it in the colder weather afterwards. Now again it is stuck down 3" which I put it in in the hot weather but it won't go back up to the closed position. Assuming the switch is still okay, (borrowed one to try and it didn't make any difference) what other parts could be needing to be replaced? Do I need to find someone with a tester to isolate where the problem is? Hope someone else has managed to solve a similar problem. TIA.

Either the mechanism has got stuck or your cable has snapped or the motor has packed up.
You need to remove the plastic cover, 3 or 4 screws at the bottom then push up and out.
Use a torch to look inside, look for a broken cable, or wires or rusty parts.
The rear door will not throw a fault code. Just good old investigation work.

Freelander window regulators are bad joke and fail constantly. Take a look in ebay for replacements and there are hundreds to choose from. So far with three different Freelanders I've changed three rear doors and one front. The rears were fairly easy to fix with a new wire kit, the front worked for a week or so with a wire kit before breaking again so I bought a regulator complete (but without the motor) and it was a b*stard to fit the motor. I haven't had the joy of fitting one to the boot door yet but no doubt that will come.
Good luck.

Thanks. The mystery deepens lol - it works fine off the rear door key! But not otherwise, so I have decided to remove the manual switch and manage without it, it does the necessary to open and close the door. They seem to be a subject all on their own!

I rarely use the boot window so I can't see it being an issue so long as it drops to open the door. If it works at all then the regulator and motor are fine, I think the car gets in a confused state sometimes as to the windows position. I've had times when the window would go down but not up and it took a lot of faffing to get it back up but I've never used the boot lock. I wouldn't remove the switch in case it is something silly like recalibration. If you ever disconnect the battery the window will drop all the way when it is reconnected.
