Son of an enthusiast

Hi there,

My father was a Land Rover enthusiast but unfortunately he passed away earlier in the year. I'm currently in the process of sorting his estate and I need some advice. My father had an '87 110 that is currently laid up on my mother's drive. It hasn't been MOT'd in over 5 years and I have no idea as to whether it runs, drives or is even complete. I'm going to put it on eBay as spares or repairs but does anyone have a rough idea of a starting price? I know that is a broad question, I'll post some pictures once I've uploaded them.

The thing with Landrovers is that the price often doesn't bear any relation to 'paperwork'. It nearly always hinges on condition, rustiness, 'uniqueness' and originality! It'd be easy to say £500, but it could also be £5000 ....

The trouble with '87 is the same as my '89 .. wrong engine for today so unless it's properly original it's not going to command the best price.

Having said that there are always people looking for projects so it's unlikely to remain unsold for long, so long as you're realistic about it's condition and don't over price it. Despite what people are saying about Landrovers keeping their value or even appreciating, that's mostly only true for good quality, properly legal and running vehicles. For projects you need to hope you get a real enthusiast to look at it .. or a proper numpty with rose tinted specs ...

I'd suggest that seeing as in Feb 2009 it failed MOT 'cos it was 'rusty and weakened' but then in March 2009 it passed MOT but with the advisory of 'repairs couldn't be seen' that someone bodged the chassis and covered it up .... Going onto SORN for so long just lets it sit and rust more, especially if it's got wet or damp or been outside ...

Sorry, I'd say it needs a new chassis as a bare minimum, so probably at the lower end of my original post ... depends on what else is wrong with it.

I'd put it in for an MOT, then you can sell it honestly, less of a risk for the buyer so they're likely to be happy to pay more because they'll have a far better idea of what needs doing.

It's beyond my capabilities to get it even close to MOT ready so I'll be starting the auction low. It's more a case of getting it off the driveway than maximising income from it. I've drafted the ad and explained that I'd prefer interested parties to come and see the vehicle to get an understanding of what they are buying. I don't wish to dupe anyone and preferably I'd like it to go for restoration but getting it off the driveway is priority number one. Thank you for all your feedback.

That'd be a good idea usually, but it's been stood more than 5 years, he doesn't even know if it runs ...
