Having spent the morning replacing a non genuine thermostat that broke after 3 months, with another non genuine one :eek:. I'm going to have to replace it again, this time with the real McCoy. The bloody thing is just not opening properly, as in for 5 minutes theres a good flow and then it shuts itself off for a few minutes!!

Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay the stealers through the nose. I paid £20, genuine about £60 from memory.

That's what it's supposed to do. The thermostat seals the water within the block and heads until the temp reaches 89 degrees it then opens and allows flow, when the cooler water from the radiator starts to flow past it it is cooled so shuts a little until the entire system is at 89 degrees then it will stay fully open. If the air flow through your your radiator is cooling the water faster than the engine can heat it (on a cold day) the thermostat will constantly open and close to maintain the coolant temperature within the water jacket of the engine at 89 degrees. Waxstats always fail shut the fact that it is opening and closing proves it is working correctly.
 
the stat on the p38 isnt in the block it is in a self contained assembly that looks like a heart with 4 pipes coming out of it... not a normal stat.....

I hear what your saying and mine was going through this cycle, but all of a sudden it wouldn't open up to let a good consistant flow of water. I know some poeple will say air lock, but I have refilled my cooling system 3 or 4 times in recent years, always follow the same procedure and have had no problems before. And up until I noticed I wasn't getting a good flow everything was fine. I am convinced it is a faulty thermostat and will replace with a genuine 1 and see what happens.

Unless it has failed and is shut causing overheating you will be wasting your money. Look for an air lock. How are you checking for, as you say, good flow what do you mean by that?

I think it is failed in the shut position because I was getting what I call a good flow i.e heat evenly distributed through out the hoses and rad, temp gauge spot on, no sign of the top hose pressurising for a good 30 minutes but shortly after this I noticed the down pipe from thermostat to the rad was starting to cool down (having had a nice consitant warm flow previously) as though the flow had been impeaded. I didn't want too risk any chance of overheating so shut everything down and let it all cool.
Went through the same procedure again and exactly the same happened.
I remember in days gone by testing different thermostates in a pan of boiling water and often seeing issues with cheaper non genuine ones.
 
The themostats are made in Land Rovers Thermostat factory which is in the same building as their tyre factory, gasket facory, nut & bolt factory and oil refinery....can't remember which part of India or China it's located !!!

To be honest and having owned landrovers for many years so you would think I should know better, but I actually thought paying £23.00 for a thermostat would mean I get a genuine one!!
As is often said the so called genuine ones are probably made in the same cheap labour factory as the non genuine , but for 40 quid more one likes to think they are made to a better standard, or am I living in Landrover La La Land :doh:
 
its 50/50 very hard at the moment to know what you are getting!

like you say all made in the same place-india/china, not sure on quality anymore.

I use dingo croft for my parts and ask hime to get me the best quality available. sometimes it comes in a landrover box sometimes not but no problems so far :D

Finally got round to replacing with a genuine Stat and everythings hunky dory again in Rangieland. Probably just got unlucky with the cheaper one and I'm sure on the whole they do the job just fine, but thats 2 that have let me down so goin to stick with the rip off (£62) one's in the future.
 
I did the same with my p38 , changed it twice but it wasnt the problem. The problem will bve somewhere else. I'm not going to say iuts this, that or the other, but you have a problem else where

Had the same problem with a front screen-wash pump recently. After the new BP one, at £14, only lasted 7 months (inc. the summer when it would'nt have been used much anyway) I had a genuine unit fitted, at £23, that did'nt work from the word go! The replacement for that was ok & as it was all warranty work I avoided any labour charges, though I have to say that the genuine pump did'nt look any different (barring some moulding numbers) to the BP unit, so it makes you wonder....
