A good friend has an auto DSE and seized number 5 cylinder. I cynically said, cut it up and sell the bits, he found a good engine from Emmotts of Colne. Then came the fun, two engines side by side, one injection pump. After all the posts read on timing pumps it all came down to the fact that its only a distribution pump, set both engines to the same degree angle, difficult with one seized pot and one with no pump, but possible if you take the sump off and be careful turning the one with no pump. Then pump off and on, a bitch due to sharp taper and keyway(hold key with welding rod),bolt the pump to middle of adjustment and slot engine back in. If you`ve remembered to turn off EVERY circuit before disconnecting the battery then purge fuel system by remotely operating pump, turn key and IT WORKED!! Kind of debunks all the doom and gloom merchants! It is possible, I saw it done, and now yet another P38 myth is debunked,EAS trouble/ Buy the french valve kit and dutch titanium piston repair, solved, lets have a P38 short -cut thread and save a lot of reading!

ive got the new seal/cylinder kit for the compressor from landroverwinkel.nl,no problems.clear downloadable fitting instructions.I must state this was sent to me for trial but let me assure you I do speak as I find.regards

Excellent. I must agree, that there is a lot of doom and gloom around about P38 ownership, I mean, don't get me wrong, they certainly have their foibles and unless you have pretty deep pockets I wouldn't recommend owning one without have the mechnical capability to work on it yourself when things go wrong but there is no reason why you can;t own one and enjoy it! I've fitted the engine from a BMW 325 tds into my wifes DSE and as part of that I had to take the top half of the fuel injection pump off the RR pump and refit it onto the BMW pump in order to get it to talk to the ECU once fitted into the RR. Numerous people said not to because you have to get the pump so acurately set up or it either wouldn't run or would rev itself to destruction. Well, I did it and just by making sure that it was all straight meant that after sorting some other niggles out it started on the first turn of the key, idled perfectly and reved beautifully!

Pump is not a distribution pump, it is an injection pump. Static timing is critical and is done to thousandths of an inch. If you have managed to slam the pump back on and got the pump timing right you have been a very lucky lad indeed. Just because the engine runs does not mean it is correct. The pump timing is adjusted electronically for various engine speeds/loads. The static timing must be correct and set at it's proper start point or this function will not work properly, engine damage could result.
Don't it just make you wonder if it is that easy, why on an engine with less than 20,000 Km setting is at TDC 0.95 mm lift +- 0.02 mm. Engines with more than 20,000 Km setting is at TDC 0.90mm lift +- 0.02. 0.02 mm is one thousandth of an inch. Sounds pretty critical to me. Or should Land Rover just delete that and say slap pump anywhere if engine runs it's ok?

Good news then, i can throw this expensive box of pump timing tools away. Set engine somewhere near, pump somewhere near and all will be well. Don't quite work that way my friend.

i am with you on this one.

So you would be happy that your petrol engine with a distributor started ran and revved ok when you stuck the distributor back in roughly the right place. Any further timing would not be required. Until it blew up that is. A diesel is no different it needs to be timed correctly, near enough is no good. When you do the cam timing if your engine has done more than 20,000 Km don't bother with the 4.61 feeler either it will be fine. Bloody amateurs.
