'cos it's a stick on one so won't have the number plate makers postcode on it.

Stick on plates are still legal as long as the follow the rules and if it was made prior to the rule change it would still be legal for no postcode, not every plate has a postcode on it just the ones made since 2001 I believe...

Now I know some people like chequer plate, but isn't: "full chequer plated new starter motor" taking it a little too far??

Would a plate on a 2006 bike be illegal if it had no postcode then? ( it has correct size digits and just passed mot)

I believe officially no as at this point it should have had a makers mark on it, MOT doesn't always means something's totally legal, it just checks whats asked on the MOT

My motorcycle's plate is not the standard barn door size, but it has the standard font and isn't a 4x3 postage stamp so doesn't take the **** - MOT as has been said, is no problem.

My Disco 2's plate is full size and has the dealer's name and postcode on it who first registered her

Diff.

I would say that the main problem with the number plate is the angle of viewing. It's a bit skyward.
It is not readable from a distance of 25 meters at a normal drivers, or pedestrians line of sight.

i got a telling off (though no ticket) for having a number plate in the "mouth" of the front of an old Mazda Rx, because "by the time the cops mobile camera was in range, the plate was hidden from view" ...well, that was his excuse anyway.

That can't be true, both mine as my dads have been through the last 4 mots with the postcode missing

Just because it passes an MOT doesn't male it legal, the MOT just states it must be readable, reflective and the font/spacing is correct, it doesn't go into the legalities of construction. the reason they should have a postcode is to clamp down on easily available plates without documentation, that's a matter for the police to enforce not the MOT guys...
