i didnt actually remove and open the ecu(mounted below driver seat). i just cleaned the connectors with brake cleaner and left to dry. then i applied some elctric cleaner and plugged it in. I will open up again and clean the injector sockets however, its strange as it was fine before i did all this!!!!

hi everyone. i have just bought a 2004 defender 90 td5 xs. I had a slight misfire on idle so i checked the red connector linked to the ecu and found oil in it. So i bought an injector harness and changed it. I made this move for safety reasons as the car was working perfectley but after reading all the issues and after finding some oil in the ecu socket i just changed it. unfortunately when i put everything back together and started it i ended up with a 4 cylinder engine. i removed top cover again and checked that all the injector clip ons are secure and they were. I then cleaned the ecu connectors again and sprayed some electric cleaner spray. but all for nothing.......HHEELLPP plls...........
I must admit that i did not clean the injector plugs and they did have some oil in them......IDEAS PLEASE

what make was the new injection loom:rolleyes:

Like I mentioned before, are the breather tubes that are hidden under the plastic engine cover gearbox and transmission? If so can I just extend those up the snorkle?

Yes, but usually (?) hooked over a handy cable or other spot somewhere along the bulkhead/airbox......... Just keep them as high as reasonable without pulling them off the bottom end and letting all that nasty water into the transmission.....;). Others will know whether any good reason not to extend them as high as you want? A

Done the breathers today, all up the top of the rollcage :)

While we are on this topic to be ready for wading -

Sealed/Moved ECU
Front & Rear Axle Raised Breathers
Transmission & Gearbox Raised Breathers
Snorkle

Anything else? Apart from maybe a wading blanket.

New injector harness should arrive tomorrow, shall fit and see. Still cant seem to find the damn earths though!

My new Injector Harness arrived today, fitted it in. It now starts much faster and better than before which is nice but the ####ing handbreak cuts the engine when its taken off!

From what ive read so far this means the car is using the handbreak cable as an earth point. Where are the earths that need to be checked?

there should be a heavy wire strap from the gearbox to the chassis rail,
also the ecu is earthed in the seat box its contained in, there should be a black wire with a round bolt down connector,
I cant remember if the engine has a seperate strap to the chassis or earths through the gearbox

I found the ECU one, that was clean.

I must just be being thick as hell, I cant find bugger all. Dont even know where to start.

lie under car on your back, head to the rear, approx drivers seat area, should be a steel cable/strap from gearbox to right hand chassis rail
