I have a Freelander TD4 Sport 2004 which i have been very happy with over the past 8 months. Its been getting colder and colder outside and have noticed a prominent cloud of smoke from the exhaust. This seems to happen once the car is up to temp and not before. I mainly get this on acceleration and when i take my foot off the accelerator. I have got a Synergy 2 box which includes the maf sensor compensator but have not changed the maf sensor yet. Its was not performing very well with out the synergy 2. Could it be the maf sensor still causing this?
To me it seems fuel related but could be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated

had this with my td4 auto. cleaned egr valve and replaced crankcase breather filter and that pretty much cured it.

disconnect the synergy 2 module and drive it for a short while. Then disconnect the MAF, and drive it again. if it is better with the MAF disconnected, then the MAF needs replacing. Do all you diagnostic work with the synergy 2 disconnected as it clouds the issue. Once your engine is running right, then reconnect the synergy 2.

good luck

Are you saying that there is a problem? I have looked on the bmw forum for diesels and they think its normal  Seems to be different views on it.

The problem i see with that method is if i disconnect the synergy box then the fuel air mixture wont be correct anyway due to the weak sensor and could give a false results. Same as disconnecting the maf. Will run rich and give smoke anyway? Hmmm Will a diagnostics test high light the problem?

I have not in any way said that there is a problem. You have posted a question about a particular symptom, i.e. smoking under acceleration and I have replied with a couple of suggestions about what you could try to rectify it. I experienced a similar problem with mine, with the same engine, and once I had cleaned the EGR valve and replaced the crankcase breather filter, it stopped smoking under acceleration.

Both cleaning the EGR and replacing the crankcase breather filter should be carried out regularly as routine service operations, but this only appeared on service schedules recently. In particular, the crankcase breather filter, as when clogged, this will pressurise the crankcase, which will cause the dipstick to lift, the resultant loss of oil pressure will potentially damage the turbo.

good luck.

Please dont get me wrong im not meaning to sound abrupt  and thats funny you should say that Gordon as i do actually have only one Kidney so giving the other away would not be good lol

I changed the synergy setting to its lowest maf compensation setting and no difference. I must admit that i dont drive like a racing driver in the car as i leave that to the evo. I bearly go above 3000rpm and if i do its because im on the motorway but even then it usually sits around the 3k mark. I did give it some omph today up the slip road to 4.5k and a fair amount of smoke easily seen from behind me. If im cruising on the motorway then there is no smoke evident. I can also see signs of smoke when pulling off. Very noticable in both cases in car lights behind me.

I have no problems in starting as it start on the button perfectly. No excessive smoke on warm up either.

Water and oil levels are ok. Would i be right in assuming that it also cant be glow plugs as it starts ok and problem isnt constant and also the injectors are ok as problem isnt constant just on acceleration and when lifting off the gas?

I will replace the maf sensor with a pierburg sensor and blank off the egr valve as i think (as Optimus Prime) this could be a major part of the problem. As far a i know its never been cleaned.

Hi
Dont you worry it was said in good humour :D

It is well worth following O P`s advice though on crankcase breather and either cleaning or blanking the egr i did this on mine and there was a vast imporovement, either is not as daunting once you get stuck in to it

Good luck

Gordon:)

I changed the crankcase breather on my last service so no problem there.
Today i will be fitting the egr blanking kit and the pierburg maf sensor. I will see if i can post up a pic of the condition of the egr valve to show its state. From what you guys have said and what i have seen on the forum its gonna be a bit clogged up.
Going to whip off the intake manifold as well and give it all a good clean :) Its sunny today, just hope it stays that way lol
