So who had fun in the snow then????

I think I let the side down a bit as I got stuck in my 2003 Freelander. The snow was deep enough so that I had problems opening my door to get out so not a complete disgrace but I think if I had kept more momentum I would have got farther. It took me about half an hour to dig out enough to move backwards 10 yards and then get stuck again. Luckily a guy in lifted defender pulled me out. I had the 3 Amigos plus handbrake light on all the way home but that seems to have cured itself now ?
Overall the freelander in the Snow is much better than the Subaru I was driving last year, but not as much fun as my Jimny that I took out this afternoon, which apart from 2 slow uncontrolled but i like to think graceful 360 s down a steep sheet ice hill was brilliant.

a classic quote from eastwood in magnum force springs to mind :D
"a man has to know his limitations":D

ha ha ha, I dont doubt you can pull my lighter lump with a 3.5ltr V8 guzzler
So your perfickmobile isnt converted to a cheaper fuel, is rust-free, and has well balanced carburretors. I bet your springs are nice and bouncy too lol

Oh yes I remember those days well....... :p

My mates just pulled a disco out of a ditch in his LS200, it was trying to pull a van down the road in the snow but slid of the road instead. Gotta admit, they do try haha.

Well my mate ended up taking the van back home safely. The disco driver had to rush back to change his pants lol.

Its just as well Freelanders can then, as my mate would have had to wait for the hired tractor to finish clearing the snow.... and a certain ambulance wouldnt have been able to get free from an icy inclined driveway last Jan ;)

My mums disco gets up steep hills easy as in the snow/ice (living in the welsh valleys we have a lot of hills + our drive is pretty much 2 miles uphill) which it gets up effortlessly.
I get my Freelander tomorrow so I'll see how that copes :)

The handling in our 2001 TD4 is a little strange.

Most of the time in an empty supermarket car park, it behaves like a front wheel drive car, ie: understeering into most things.

When you do manage to initiate some lift off oversteer, catching it and balancing it on the throttle to get some 4 wheel drive drifting is nigh on impossible, especially if there a slight incline in the car park - it will either just drift straight in to understeer again, or rapidly donut straightaway. There is very little in-between.

It might be that I've got a "tight" VCU, but the handling characteristics are weird, to say the least.

...... Obviously the braking action of HDC can still lead to a slide/skid if the tyres are unable to find any traction what so ever. However, I often found it more effective to just put it in first and manually slow the car down via engine braking.......

You are not doing it right

What you do is:-

Come to a careful stop at the crest of a hill
put the handbrake on
put your vehicle in 1st Gear or (Auto) Steptronic 1st Gear
then select HDC
then let off handbrake and slowly set off (creep) over crest and take all feet away from the pedals and just steer gently to the bottom of the slope

That's what I did, I didn't imply that I didn't. I just didn't give step by step details on what I did lol.

Sometimes taking HDC off helped me to regain control!

rescued a gaylander v6 today........using my 90 quattro.....SNIGGER:D:D

Many thanks! I was that GAYlander!!!

Had a great afternoon driving from Hamble via Winchester to Petersfield on some nice untreated back roads .Then a few hours sledging with the kids on Butser hill! Returned to find a flat battery! (some muppet me!! ) left the lights on! Big big thanks to Juicyv8 for being there to recue us!
