So my Landy has developed a bit of a whirring/rattling noise.....

Landy 90, 1996 300TDi
Over the last few weeks I have become increasingly aware of an intermittent rattle/jingle/grinding noise. Essentially all is fine when the engine is under drive, but if we go done hill using engine braking and the vehicle is running 'ahead' of the engine braking there is a definite whirring/jingling noise. If I depress the clutch it goes. This made us think it was going to be a transfer box slack problem. More recently I have had some instances when the jingling/grinding/whirring noise is happening when the engine is under drive and pulling - ie no slack in the transmission.
Any tips on diagnostic tips to narrow down the issue further? We would like to sort it ourselves - OH is very hands on and we are not complete novices when it comes to vehicle maintenance (OH has refurbed an old David Brown tractor and John Deere tractor and we have done propshafts, wheel bearings, rear crossmember already on this Landy) but are by no means experts either!

I've got a vague recollection of a thread about a similar issue and it being suggested clutch spring finger snapping off. Don't know though, mate. At least someone might reply and rule this out.

Whereabouts are you? I could probably come round and try and diagnose it if you are still struggling. I think we will know people in common if you have those tractors.

I appreciate you have mentioned the propshafts have been changed already, but this does sound very like a propshaft UJ has gone. Worth a look.

Also take a look at the brake disks ( if you have disks fitted not drums).
If the disks are worn and the lip created is catching the pads it can make quite disconcerting noises at odd times.

Thanks for the input so far

We had a bit of a rootle around under the Landy yesterday - gave the UJ's a good look at, push and wriggle - nothing to particularly get excited about so we greased 'em up. We did notice that one of the rubber mounting pads by the gear box had completely lost the bottom most bolt and the top nut had worked its way up the topmost bolt so the pad wasn't exactly fixed in place. So we got some new pads and fitted them today - haven't had a chance to see if that's had any impact on any of the noises as yet!
We do keep an eye on the pads - recently changed discs and pads so pretty confident it's not them.
Given that the noise - when it does happen - can be stopped by dipping the clutch does suggest that the clutch maybe the point at issue - though there is no change in biting point or pull or gear selection.
Turboman we are pretty much bang in between Hayle and Helston - about a mile the Helston side of Leedstown. We are thinking of taking the Landy to S and J's at Wheal Sara by us if it is a clutch issue - OH doesn't fancy THAT job!

I know where you mean. Think I have seen your vehicle around. I live outside Connor Downs myself, down a long lane.
If you have used S&Js before, and are happy, that is probably a good idea. If not, a friend of mine works on them, he is good, and not far from you, as it happens.
Clutch is a fair old job, but not to difficult, just a lot of spannering, and you need good lifting gear.
As I said, always happy to have a look myself if it helps, I always like to look at landies, improves my database!

Mine did this when the output bearing in the transfer case started failing.

Symptoms were clicking and whirring and if you grabbed the propshaft you could move it up and down

Ok so we ended up replacing both front shocks as one was completely kaput. We ended up welding washers into the axle brackets as both original holes had been eroded and elongated meaning there could be lateral play.This was all a few weeks ago now but post work evaluations got somewhat sidetracked as my elderly father died in mid October so attention was elsewhere.
Anyhoo - immediately post shock change there didn't seem to be any change, BUT now the rattle/whirr seems to have completely disappeared..... So, none the wiser but glad the noise has stopped!
