How lucky am I. A few weeks ago I noticed a new noise coming from my 2.5 diesel P38. I had fitted a new FIP a couple of months ago and the truck was running better than it ever had but this noise was worrying . It sounded like a dry bearing. Spent a few days pondering what it could be, took the drive belts off and ran it. The noise was still there with no ancillaries running so it’s not the water pump, air con, alternator or anything else belt driven. Got to be somewhere within the engine, can only be timing chains or something so new chains etc ordered. Start stripping the engine and find the cam chain is slack. Must be that! Well almost. Take the front cover off, turn the crank and hear a click from the pump pulley. Closer inspection shows one of the rollers on the lower chain is missing and the hole that takes the pin worn to the point that there was less than a millimeter of link left:eek: ( see pics ). The chain adjuster on the top chin was out so far it had locked up and I couldn’t get the tool in to compress it. How the thing was running god only knows. New timing gear fitted and all’s fine again. Thing is I’m not particularly gentle with the Range Rover. Think I was very lucky to have caught it before it snapped and destroyed the engine. The tuck has done 160k miles and although I believe the head gasket has been done I don’t think the front cover has ever been off before. Would appear the life of the chains is about 100k – 120k.
