Snow/ICE tyres - close shave

Not having a great day, 2 near misses as our lane resembles a bob sleigh track, and I was going v v slow. - one side ways nearly into a car and a full 360 on a steep icy road which nearly resulted in a flip into a ditch. :doh:

I know any car is hopeless in ice without chains, I'm running Pirelli Scorpions M&S 225/55/17 - wondering if there is a dedicated tyre that might aid traction in such situations or are chains the best solution?

But on ice nothing (apart from studs) will help you much...

Dedicated snow tyres like those used in alpine ski resorts are your best bet in snow, but only chains or studs are any good on ice.

I had Scorpions on my old Disco 1, they were fine on everything but sheet ice. Got Goodyear wranglers, 215 65 16's on the Hippo, so far so good. The track to my house is very icy, only me and a chap who lives further down are using it at present! He has a Disco 1.
I've had a few Landies, tyres make a big difference! On a standard car they mean the difference to being able to drive on even quite modest amounts of snow. A friend has just had some sensible winter type tyres on the front of a Corsa. What a difference!
I'm convinced that the reason so many people are having problems is these modern ultra low profile tyres with their "knife cut" type minimal tread, and hard compound rubber to give low rolling resistance and better road milage. Their footprint is just too large too, further reducing grip.

Snow socks are a useful and easy alternative to chains or studded tyres.

yer hands get bloody cold putting on snow chains, snows funny like that i suppose.... had use mine to get the last 50 yards home the ohher night, was more an excuse to justify them to be honest....
