Snorkel. Mud got in. Im baffled.

Hey chaps,

Just came back from a trip to Salisbury Plain, which was awesome until for the second time lost my snorkel mushroom! Luckily only 10 mins before we left and we had been through all the water.

Thought i'd check my air box since I was driving for 2 hours with no mushroom. To my supprise I found it had muddy water inside it, a small amount underneath/snorkel side (odd since it is totally sealed...) even more supprising was a larger amount of mud on the top/turbo side :confused:

No idea how it got in there but it looks asthough the muddy water 'shot up' hit the roof of the box and dropped back down. Whole thing was coated inside. Minimal mud on the MAF and none in the turbo pipe thank god.

Never noticed any change when driving what so ever, and it runs fine.

Yet no idea how the water got in there? Any ideas?

All the clips where attached in the right places, box was together properly. Engine stalls when snork covered. So leads me to believe its sealed.
 
Bumper deep was the deepest. Wading blanket fitted. Did hit one a little too fast, mainly because it was so muddy and others got stuck.

Lots of ~20 - 30cm deep puddles though.

Either way most the mud was on top of the filter not underneath, (where it should be i suppose). Just baffled as to how it got on top...

As fenders chuck up so much water onto the screen when you hit water could it not have come down the snorkel while your mushroom was missing?

They finish right next to the top corner of the screen, so it is definitely possible...?

Once you work out the volume of fresh air used per minute - errrrr. 2.5l /2/ 4 ..... per rev per min = say 3000l per minute at 1000rpm that's one hell of a vacuum cleaner with mud flying around the inlet...? A

(think my strokes v revs v volume might have gone a bit cockeyed there, but whatever its still a lot of sucking..........!!)
 
as for the bit under the filter, I'd guess if it got that wet it will have pulled a hole through the filter element somewhere? A
 
I lost my mushroom 10 mins before the end, no more water crossings or puddles. Though the snorkel side is the bottom half of the airbox this had mud less mud but still present. In light of that I think i'll replace the siliconed up sections with a single pipe. Anyone suggest what pipe to use?


The wondering comes as there was muddy water on TOP of the filter in the top half of the airbox! No holes/damage at all in the filter and the water ingress was very minimal, not enough to damage the filter itself.

Im not talking about a lot here, not enough to do any damage I dont think. Just makes me nervous as if some got it in whats to say more wont in the future?

What have you got between the air filter box and the wing? Mine's got a thing near the driver's footwell with an open branch pointing downwards which could easily suck up water as it's so near the ground. If I were fitting a snorkel to go wading with I'd try and find a piece of flexible hose to bypass this completely and go straight from the air filter to the snorkel as this would be a weak point. Maybe it's intended to allow accidental splashes to drain out, but in deep water or heavy spray it could be a liability.
 
Airbox and the wing is the standard TD5 pipe work though all was removed, cleaned and sealed with silicone. On the wing the the internal piece is silicone'd on the the wing and the snork is silicone'd on the outside then screws bind the two peices together.

Right from where the pipe leaves the airbox to the mushroom is all silicone'd up. Inc blanking off the drainage thingy in the middle pipe and the one inside the airbox itself.

Turbo end is not silicone'd up as water is never going to be that deep to affect it. Though all clips etc are nice and tight.

The airbox itself is not silicone'd closed as I need to get in there for obvious reasons.


Plan is now to remove the TD5 pipe work totally and run a peice of rubber pipe up inside the snorkel and then silicone in place. Two joins has to be better than 6 joins.
