I've snapped my timing belt again on my (disco) 200tdi engine, It's bent 5 pushrods, but I can't see any other damage. I've had the sump off and looked up into the bores, everything looks fine. Question is how can you tell when timing the motor up if the cam is 180 degrees out to the crank? I.E. what is the position of the cam lobes on no.1 cylinder?

Get pistons 1 and 4 to TDC, look for the marks on the cam pulley and timing case (never done a 200tdi only a 2.5NA, so now sure where they are, probably an arrow on the case and a mark on the pulley) and line them up. Check injection pump pulley is lines up too, fit belt, tension, turn engine over (with rocker shaft refitted) and make sure everything turns OK and you hear compression sounds from the engine.

As long as 1 and 4 are at TDC the mark will line up the timing properly.

MHM.. did you end up doing the timing belt yourself? remember sometime ago you were thinking about doin it?

yup - took about 40 minutes from removing the front timing cover to replacing it, with the correct tools. It just took about 5 days to remove the cover .

oh - get yoself a full set of bolts too. they are notorious for shearing.

lol... well, i know where to go when I decide to get mine done then! :D

Never done it on the disco as i didnt have a clue and there was too much stuff to remove, but with the defender there's loads of room to work between the rad and the engine, should make it easier
