Snapped glow plugs

Hi all got two snapped glow plugs on freelander 1 TD4 ( BMW engine) . does head have to be taken off or can I use the drill kits I've seen on eBay. anyone used these kits and how easy are they use thanks for any assistance

If you need to ask id get someone that knows what they are doing to repair it

Is it easy outs your on about ?? if you snap one of them your stuffed you wont drill it out

There are mobile mechanics who can take them out for you for less then the price of taking the head off.
Or you could try leaving them there and work with just two glow plugs. If it starts with a bit of extra smoke it's no big deal.

That's what mine does. I can't get No1 glow plug out of mine. So rather than break it off, I just changed the 3 I could get out. It starts a little rough and smokey when it's very cold, but otherwise it's fine.

No not easy outs these are glow plug electrode removal kits for 8mm and 10 mm glow plugs ,going to change the other 2 and see how it goes has long as they don't snap Thanks for reply's

Ah ok I looked at them on the bay looks like a cheapo chocolate set waste of money.....
Id have a guess youl probably snap the tap in it.
Have you tried taking your motor for a decent run then try & crack them when its roasting hot??

Saw a good you tube video using a kit to drill out broken glo plugs and one very good tip of setting a torque wrench below the SNAP torque around 30 NM or whatever the Glo plug manufacturer says the correct setting is.
I always get the vehicle hot and use oil around the Glo plugs when removing them with a back and forth undoing action in small increments to help avoid breaking them but the torque wrench method gives an indication of how near to break point you are!

If this throws and EML will it not have to be sorted before the next MOT?

I don't think dodgy (or missing) glow plugs give any warning lights. Just make it hard to start.

Wish my Astra was like that - any problems with the glow plug circuit and it throws an error.

Most diesel ECUs will, but the EDC on the TD4 doesn't. It does know is the glow plugs aren't working, but it doesn't illuminate the MIL.

Does it throw a fault code?

Not sure as my memory is bad but when a Glo plug snaps can't remember whether the central electrode could fall out into the cylinder just wondered as a few have said they just drive around with a broken one maybe someone who has done them more recent than me can shed some light.

Managed to get the two out without snapping them . at least it starts a bit better

Good news mate happy days

There's a company called Extract engineering Ltd in Carisle takes them out for about £75 each may be a little out the way for you but will be some one around you that will do it

Not on my 05 TD4, using the Icarsoft I930. I suspect that T4 might show a code though.
