snapped the head off one of the long bolts that hold the water pump on, managed to get cambelt cover off still but has anyone got any tips on removing the pin without drilling it out, i have tried mole grips but pin felt a bit weak

I think there are two types of stud removers. I have the type you drill into the broken stud, insert the stud remover which has a left handed thread which means when you turn it anti clockwise it gets tighter then starts to turn the stud.It looks like a drill bit. Every chance the stud extractor will break. If you have lots of stud to grip then the other type has a sort of grips on the end and they grab the stud and as you turn it, it is supposed to remove the stud. Heat with both methods is a must and penetrating fluid left to soak overnight (diesel is best) will help.Good luck and keep us posted.

only just found this about a snapped bolt.
In the past, i have tapped the end of the stuck bolt with a hammer and gentle force to try and jar the threads in block before using mole grips or welding a nut on stud. the heat from welding helps out, even with the "shocking" treatment, and if the weld is good, you get better grip than stud removers.
Must admit I never tried this on my disco, but done mobile car/van repairs once upon a time, so had plenty of practice with "problems"
