Snaking

I know, yet another question!!


What would cause snaking when not towing and the tyre pressures have been checked and are correct while driving along the moterway between the speeds of 65 and 70 mph?

I have different makes of tyres - curtisy of the dodgy garage - would this make a difference? (All road tyres.)

i had trouble with mine wandering for no reason had 2 new front tyres fitted recently and they were balanced has not done it since

It should have been balanced when it got serviced (Dec 06.) I know that the front shocks are leaking but I have been told that I don't need to worry about them at the moment. I also have a knocking (sounds like a stone popping out of a deep tread tyre) that can be felt through the floor and steering colum. And it only snakes on sertain surfaces, not all the time - thank god!

Does it do it on motorway at about 60 ish? what is the diameter of tyres, there are SO many things this could be, Seriously getting stuck in the truck tyres rut on the inside lane screws me up!!!!!!!!!
A FWD wheel alighnment, not balance, alighnment should discover problem.
Could be steering, bushes, track rod, wheel bearing etc etc

must agree on the truck ruts on the motorway, they just to wide for the disco track width and flings you about all over the show. a bmw of mine did this though and found it was the rear wishbones causing it, totally different setup i know but might wanna look at bushes/suspension.

E&I - does your car have ACE?

one of the main reasons for a caravan snaking 99.9% of the time is the fact that caravans need to be loaded properly,i don't mean to offend you but do you just throw your stuff in and drive off,all the heavy stuff should go over the axle of the caravan(the awning,wheel locks etc)if there is no room in the car,and things like water carriers as close to the axle as you can,all the light stuff can be spread around the floor,it has always worked for me with no problems,was there a lorry passing when it started to snake? i always get as close to the hard shoulder as i can when a lorry or coach is passing,and slow down a bit,they often don't give a **** about caravans and get really close,if you get the car and van sucked in with the airstream it can be scary,i never drive much slower than 60mph so you should'nt have a problem,i did'nt want to right a book about this but there is no other way for me to tell you if you want to get there in one peice,you need to check yor van tyre pressures aswell

am disconbobulated again! where does the caravan come in to it?

Sorry, wouldn't fit a couple of horses in a caravan! It snakes when NOT towing. Done the tyre presures.

Ok - if it is truck tyre ruts, what canb be done?


Looks like I will be looking for a jack next then, some theifing bastard took mine out before it got passed on to the garage where I brought it.

yeah ACE - active cornering enhancement - a hydraulic ram fitted to the roll bars, was fitted to the disco 2's

Mine had a knock felt through the floor pan and the steering.
get under the nearside front and try to waggle/lift the roll bar, see if the nearside bush is worn... it will take you 20 seconds to check it out?

must of been ****ed when i first saw this thread you know when you think you have read something properly and you have'nt(doh what a plonker)but if it happens to anyone in the futue this is why, am off now for another beer maybe i could bring some confusion into another thread later

Blinking blimey, this got a bit confusing!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think all of us will have a certain amount of " ROAD WAVERING!!!!! from front wheels get it checked E&I , If you think it's Danger mouse.

Hi,

Been off checking other forums - sorry.

Only happens at speed (60 mph plus) on the motaway (not towing) but only on certain surfaces. Nothing to do with lorries passing.
