I have a 1987 90 with a 2.5 turbodiesel engine. On early morning starts the
exhaust shows a moderate amount of (what looks like) oil smoke. The exhaust
clears after a short while and remains clear under all types of driving,
which I think might exclude the turbo from being the root cause. Warm
starts only show a very small puff of whitish smoke which clears very
quickly. Oil consumption is what you might expect from a well cared for
older engine - that is some but not lots.

Not being a long time owner I don't know what is "normal". Any ideas of the
cause would be greatly appreciated.

probably diesel smoke, though, from incomplete combustion with a cold
engine. 's common enough on old diesels.

I asked the same question about six months ago with respect to my tdi 300.
Consensus seemed to be that it is normal and not to worry. Right enough, it
doesn't seem to have got any worse or caused any problems, and the (land
rover specialist) garage have serviced it a couple of times since and not
commented that it was out of the ordinary.

The puff of black smoke from from 200 and 300 Tdi's is due
to a brief patch of low pressure in the induction system
leading to incomplete combustion, and indeed is normal.
The old 2.5 Diesel's dont have this "feature". However,
a couple of seconds of "oily" smoke on start up is not
uncommon due to hardened valve guide seals, and as such
is nothing to worry about either, just keep an eye on.

My initial reaction was the valve stem seals. I will keep an eye on this.

I rebuilt my 2.5 n/a, and it still has a brief smoke when you start
it.
When it smokes all the time, and you find yourself leaving a
smokescreen behind - then its time to start thinking about doing
something!

 
My 110 TD5 smokes noticeable for about 10 miles, until the thermostat
reaches its half-way mark. Then it is ok.
