Hi I have a 200 tdi defender 90. when I start it from cold it misses and smokes like mad, it lasts for about 5 minutes and then runs like a dream with no smoke and doesn't appear to be missing - any ideas??? Cheers

my 150,00mile 1989 90 with a 2.5td (not tdi) does the same thing. fills the street with blue smoke, which dies away after about 5 minutes, so I too would like to know!!!
a neighbour reckoned it might be the valve stem oil seals that are duff, so they let oil into the cylinders the engine is stopped, and the oil burns off when it is started.

Not sure if it is though as he is a legendary bullsh***er

I had assumed it was just a standard feature of a 17 yr old landrover.

Not meaning to sound thick (but I am)- but how would I check them dont really do mechanics.

Wot with a name like Sparky, you don't do electrics. You could get done under the trade descriptions act you could.

Two ways of checking them :-

1. Using a multimeter check for continuity through the plug no continuity = plug nackered.

2. Even if you get continuity the plug may not be up to scratch. Hold the plug in a vice on the hexagon bit, connect the vice to the negative terminal of a 12V battery and connect the positive terminal to the top of the plug. within a few seconds the plug should glow red hot from the tip downwards.

That was the trouble with the plugs I bought they were OK for continuity but didn't glow red hot.

The way l've always checked em is, disconnect the bus bar/wire that joins them all together, then run a live wire from the battery and flash it on the top of the plug, if it sparks it works if not its knackerd.

checked voltage & it was a bit low - fitted new wires and connections all seems ok now - Thanks to all!!!
