** Sorry, i've reposted with more detail, didn't add to the original thread due to it turning into an off topic discussion.

Hi,

I've managed to start my beast today for the first time in months - as normal she spits out loads of white smoke on startup which calms down a little after 30 or so seconds. The smoke is white.

I was looking around the engine bay and noticed that when it is running and the oil filler cap is removed smoke is coming out, which again, is white.

I've been told by a friend that pressure is getting past the pistons, does this sound about right?

what does the problem sound like and how easy is it to fix?

Also, brnocz suggested that "'i should put my finger in the oil filler hole and see what colour the crap is in side, if its brown gooey **** wash the filler cap out with white spirit or petrol"' - very grateful for the response but unsure what this suggests, and how it will help??

She is a 1972 series III,

Thanks in advance,

Matt

I'm afraid that if you're going to make use of the forum. Off topic discussions are something you'll have to get used to. We don't really do "on Topic" It's the way the forum runs.

It does indeed sound like back pressure of some sort is getting into the sump. and the most likely cause is worn or broken rings. the cure required some rather serious spanner work. Do a search there are several threads detailing what's involved.

The gunk in the cap could be blocking the breathers. As suggested clean it out and see if it helps. Also use an Airline to blow down the breather pipes to ensure that they're not blocked as well.

The first thing you should do is get the engine running and up to full temperature, and keep it running for a couple of hours. A nice long drive would be good.

Most of the white stuff is STEAM and it makes a nasty emulsion with the oil. Just about the only way to get rid of it is an oil change followed by a long run at full temperature.

Make sure your thermostat is working, and in winter change it for a 88° or 92° stat.

If the engine starts up reasonably well there can't be all that much wrong inside.

in response to mattmoos comments, the faults he was saying he was having were an indication to a blocked breather or breather pipes, having worked on engines most of my working life (now 55) and the reason i said to check for gunge in the oil filler cap would have been the first thing i would check and from knowledge the state or colour of the crap inside the filler cap would tell me what to go for, and the time ive said this if you have a problem always start at the begining of the chain eliminate as you go along, if you find some thing rectify the fault and restart the engine or what ever part of the vehicle you are working on, if the fault persists go to the next link in the chain. good luck

I wasn't arguing with that - I was assuming he was going to do that right away.

We are on the same side over this one.

charles y wasnt having a pop at you m8 i was just trying to get the point across a lot of people dont always give a good run down on the fault and using my knowledge and your self with your knowledge go for the begining of the chain, but most people go for it half way down, ie landy wont start so the starters knackerd you know where im coming from, i didnt mean it to come acroos as an argument and i appolagise if it sounded tho i was, regards ji
