hello! I recently purchased a Discovery 200Tdi with a "reconditioned gold seal" engine in it. However, it seems to chuck out a load of blue/black smoke when I put my foot to the floor, is this normal? Total newbie to the Land Rover scene. Many thanks!

How long ago did you purchase it 'cos you have rights? Don't do anything like work on it before speaking to whoever you bought it from .. it should have a warranty.

A bit of smoke is, but you said " a load of blue/black smoke", which might be something wrong.

An amount of black smoke is reasonable, especially if the FIP has been 'turned up', but blue smoke with it isn't usually a good indicator, other than of worn rings or bores, or possible valve wear, tappet wear etc.

There is a design fault on the 200Tdi whereby the crankshaft pulley slips. If you are lucky (like I was) you lay down more smoke than a World War One Battleship. If not you trash the valves into the pistons. Get the pulley checked.

My 300's timing was stuffed, due to ware on the crank sprocket key way, but that's not blue (engine oil) smoke...
