Sorry a typical newbie asking a question straight away!

before I do though must say that I love this car had it a year and apart from needing a new alternator has never let me down but............

Had a few intermittent/ongoing issues with my little hippo 2002 td4

1) dodgy burning smell from engine
2)brakes not as effective as could/should be and pulls to left slightly when braking
3)handbrake doesn't really work at all!

As I am no mechanic (not even slightly!) and female can anyone recommend a garage/mechanic who is firstly knowledgeable and secondly wont rip me off for the afore mentioned reasons!!!:D
or at least some basic ideas as to what issue is or tests I can do to try to limit the options?

1) no idea but if it catches fire it will resolve your other problems
2) Seized brake caliper.
3) Seized handbrake cable/ mechanism.

if you Brake pedal is pressed and it feels as though you are not going to stop as the pedal is hard it could be the vacuum pipe , to check this look for a narrow rubber pipe that goes over the gear box and check it has not got a hole in it as it does rub on the gear box .

If the shoes/handbrake aren't adjusted, then the brakes will not feel very strong. If you really have to stamp on the pedal and still feels like nothing then check vac pipe as mentioned above or the whole servo. When my L series failed it was the servo- which was the last thing to replace after I had done everything else!

It would be much easier to recommend a Garage,
if we could see where your from..

It wont matter how nice and knowledgeable the
mechanic is if he is 500 miles away from you..

Thanks all! It's more they aren't quite right the brakes rather than don't work.

I'm based in Anglesey north wales
