My defender 110 300tdi smokes like a teenager, I know about changing the air filter, which I'm getting round to.

Anyone got any other tips? Do these fuel additives I'e seen in the shops do any good?

Just to clarify, it's the good old fashioned black smoke from pedal-pumping that I have the problem with rather than the upsetting blue/grey kind.

Does the car have an egr valve if so may be worth fitting a blank plate look on e bay.
Air filter blocked, collapsed hose.
I dont know what year the egr came in on the 300 def, but pretty sure it was 94 for the disco 300.

Pedal pumping? You should never ever pump the pedal to start a 300tdi up..... I just turn the key and depending on the weather and if the glow plugs are needed fire her up. extra fuel for cold starting is automatically supplied by the injector pump.
You will always get a puff of black smoke when starting her up... I used a couple of treatments of Red x that was on offer in Asda for £2 as it claims to clean the injectors but I wouldn't use it all the time. I have always used the cheapest 15/40w mineral engine oil for older deisel engines. Nice and simple stuff.... just like the Land Rover :)
