At 191,000 miles is there anything (cheaply) that I can do to try to reduce the black smoke from my 90? It smokes all the time, but is particularly bad when going up hills or trying to accelerate quickly e.g when joining the motorway.

I know they all smoke, but I can see me getting pulled over if I'm not careful.

FYI it had a new cambelt fitted during the MOT failure work, so I would hope that the timing is correct, especially as it subsequently passed the emissions test for the MOT back in Feb.

I have suffered the appalling embarrassment of this and have a few tips that do help. I drive 2.5 n/a diesel 175,775 miles on the clock. First less heavy on the accelerator when pulling away, get used to the fact it is embarrasingly slow in pull off. Turn down the diesel from the pump to the injectors but not too much. Make sure the injectors are clean, spray pattern is important. Redex through tank twice a year or if you can get them tested should be free at a decent small engineers. Dont waste money on cetane boosters or other diesel additives and MAKE SURE IT CAN BREATHE. Hope this helps, enjoy it as much as I do mine.

Thanks for those tips. I am already light on the right foot as I just see ££££££ coming out the exhaust if I press too hard.

It's interesting about the breathing though. When I got it back after it failed the MOT in Feb (and then passed after parting with mucho casho). When the guy brought it round from the garage, the engine was really loud. He opened up the bonnet without me saying anything to see why, and noticed that my snorkel had been left disconnected. He told me it was strangling the car and that was why they had left it off (personally, I think they forgot to re-connect it after doing some work). So, I left it disconnected for a while, but to be honest it didn't seem any different. I might replace the air filter though as I have had the car over 2 years and I haven't changed it

Will try the Redex too as it's a bugger to start when it's really cold (fitted new glow plugs last Nov)

Cheers, Daz

With the starting I assume you know about turning the ignition halfway and waiting a good thirty seconds (on the springy bit) before turning her over. This heats the glow plugs. Twelve months before I learned that bit. Also make sure your injectors are properly seated so no air gets in around them/diesel leaks out this also makes a difference. I suspect POS might have had a look at this thread he has helped me loads with advice on this engine and might be worth chasing up.
