I was driving me 300tdi Defender today and she was driving fine on downward slopes and flat roads but any hills and she wouldn't put past 30mph any gear just sluggish power output, the hill was just a casual slope. Thanks for any help, just doing my head in holding thousands of cars up flashing lights and horns. I can tell you more info if you need it. :D

Split/colapsed intercooler hoses? .Air in your fuel line?. Or how about simple as fuel filter full of crap, worth a change for starters ,Any type/colour of smoke from your exhaust?

Intercooler hoses looks in good shape, air in the fuel line sounds promising but wouldn't she be sluggish and spluttering during normal driving? Ah forgot about the fuel filter I'll check that. Nope just colourless smoke on startup then goes after the engine has woken up. Thanks Angelo Damato, I'll look at the fuel filter tommorow mornin'.

sounds like you have the same problem as me mate. i couldnt even get off my boss's gravel on his garden path.

dose this sound the same; extremly slow on start and take off. runs fine once the engine has warmed up. but still slow when starting off in first. any slight incline the engine starts to struggle.....

i replaced my filter, wasnt that, replaced my lift pump, wasnt that. going to check my leak off pipes on pay day, that was the next place i was told to look.

let me know how you get on, this one has been bugging me for a while now.

cheers

Ben

Might be worth thinking about injectors.
Ah had the set out of the white bus POP tested and came back guid. Changed them over to the green bus and now it pulls a lot better up hill in a higher gear and a lot less smoke.... just a thought;)
Might be worth just taking them out, giving them a clean and renew copper washers to see if that helps any;):D

Yeah trying to reverse it off my drive is a nightmare and have to get someone to give it a good push but once a slow start she runs fine until a hill, well my pipes SEEM fine but there could be a hidden crack, which I'll see by taking them off and running water through them.

Thanks Bustersbus I haven't checked the injectors so that I shall do today, thanks again!

Nice! Tell me if it works? :D

Well today I replaced the air feed hose as that looked quite bad, and also replaced a core plug that was worse for wear and at first she could have out ran a punto but I got onto a 50mph long hill and none of the gears worked she would rev hard and no amount of acceleration would push her, I was then travelling at about 20mph to get up the hill and it stank of coolant, but that could be when I replaced the core plug the coolant leaked onto the exhaust and block then it got hot. I dragged her home with a fight then when I opened the bonnet a tiny bit of smoke was coming out of what seemed the gear box when I pushed the accelarator, it didn't have that sweet coolant smell. Could it be the clutch gone? I checked the filters and they look like new, should I check the injectors too?

I tried the smoke test when the engine was coolish and no smoke came out. Oh and on startup black smoke bellowed out of the exhaust indicating it was running a bit rich what could this be?

sounds like clutch has gone, try and stall it in 5th, if not then new clutch time:)

Goddamit you are good at problems! went for a drive out onto the field and she would idle without stalling with the handbreak on, 5th gear and clutch out. Is it a do it yourself job to replace the clutch plate or is it garage time? Thanks Landowner! :D

is it best to get the gearbox out to do it? the clutch in my td is just starting to slip. i had planned on doing it when i do a tdi conversion but it has started to go alot sooner than i thought, and i dont have the money for en engine yet!! :-( will the td clutch fit the 200tdi?
