I have a 2003 MY Discovery2. I started servicing about 6 years ago following horrendous dealer bills. I have a lot of Motor Trade experience so ths wasn't a problem. The first big service I did involved draining all fluids and refilling etc. I mistakenly put ATF Dexron in the ACE and Power steering reservoirs at this time. Recently I sprang a leak from the flexible ACE pipe from the pump so decided it was time for a bit of pre-emptive care. I replaced the flexible section with a made up pipe, carfully including the attenuators in the pipe work and using high pressure hydraulic couplers to splice in to the main steel pipe work. I further replaced the gearbox cooler pipes and the Power steering pipes which were incredibly rusty. All put back together with new air springs and away to go. Reading the workshop manual I found out of course that the steering and Ace should have a special fluid so that's what I used. My problem is/are; ACE just a little tickety, not a problem but I suspect that is because of my home made repair. (cheapskate) Power steeing though is a lot noisier, annoyingly so. Pipe work all Land Rover, well Britpart and does not foul anywhere. I think my long winded question is why can't one use ATF Dexron for the ACE and Power steering. I used it for six years and although slightly thicker never had problems including during bitterly cold Alpine driving. It also seems a much more lubricating fluid than the watery green ACE fluid. Final question. Can't get the air suspension and rear height light to go off but air suspension works perfectly. Except the variable height switch. Had to set height with Hawkeye which shows no faullts with the SLS system.
Thanks for any replies. I would appreciate reasoned answers though.
Richard.

For the SLS problem my first thought is some wiring/electrical issue on the ORM section... unplug the ORM switch and see what happens.... if no joy then unfortunately it might be an ECU fault.

1. ACE - making noises is not that unusual, have you changed the filter in the ACE valve block? Did you do a bleed sequence when your worked on it previously?
Using Dexron atf should be fine in the ACE system.

2. PAS - noisy pas is often due to air in the system or low levels or low tyre pressures on the front. I run all ours at 32psi. ditto re atf.

3. SLS - Could be a faulty ride height sensor. As they only costs about £25 even for LR ones I would be replacing them as a matter of course.

Thanks Big Lad.

No I didn't do a full bleed as it was only the pump to Valve block pipe. The fluid is flowing nicely in the reservoir. I think it is just my home made pipe hasn't the right compliance to work with the in line attenuators. It's not bad though.
The Steering is the real noisy thing and is far worse than it was pre new pipes. I wondered if any body had found ATF fluid to run quieter.
The SLS was fine before the airbag change. Apart from going down due to the leak. So i suspect the Hawkeye has triggered an ecu fault light. Just doesn't give a code when interrogated. I had to let the air out and then pump up the bags to 525 I think after fitting. The suspension works perfectly and raises and drops if I hook or unhook my 3 ton trailer. Just will not turn two lights off and will not raise rear suspension with dash switch.
Any Ideas?

?

I've just had my steering box replaced and it was re-filled/fully flushed through and the system now runs on ATF (Was LR PAS fluid previously) and I have not noticed any difference in 'noise'.
Hope this helps.
