Hi,
Had a problem with my defender the other day! was out in it for a while, came home and when I jumped back in about 10 mins later Bloody thing wouldn't start  Lights all came on ok but starter seemed to just turn very slowly! have read a few threads and there seems to be a problem with the solenoids but mine wasn't doing the click just turned very slowly without any oooomph! It got dark so left it till next day and tried jump starting it to no avail! just done the same. tried it again the next day and it gave a slight pause then started no problem
Now back to not starting and just turning over slowly. Would this repair kit mentioned in a few threads fix this or is it a full replacement of the starter motor required

Any advice most welcomed.
Atb George.

You may not need a repair kit but they dont cost a lot and if you are taking the starter out why not sort it?
When I changed my engine I stripped the starter down and apart from a little pitting the solenoid switch contacts were nearly new after more than a 100k miles. I had a repair kit handy but opted to clean the existing contacts up with a small wire brush fitted to my Dremmel tool. After a few minutes they looked like new.
I also ran an extra earth cable from one of the starter mounting bolts to the main chassis earth point and it made a definite difference to cranking speed.
