Slipping clutch

So i was on the way to slab common last Sunday and I noticed that under acceleration the clutch was slipping a bit. After a few miles I noticed that the clutch pedal was not returning to its normal position so if I lever the pedal up by pulling it with my foot then it stops slipping but when I change gear again the clutch doesn't come all the way back up again and starts slipping again.

I can't see any spring on the pedal so what is the problem likely to be? How does the clutch pedal get returned to its normal position? I have to weld in a new drivers footwell at some point so I guess I will have to take all the pedal boxes apart then anyway but I'd appreciate some advice in case I will be needing any new parts.

It's a 1985 90 with a 200 tdi defender engine by the way!

there should be a spring on the pedal.

if you lift the pedal up does it stop slipping? that would be the return spring then stick a new one on the do go flaccid eventually

I was just having a look around online for a new spring but the only reference I can find to clutch pedal springs on Land Rovers is for Series 2/3, not 90 / defender models.

I haven't actually seen a spring on my pedal assembly, not that I've had it apart yet, but can anyone actually confirm that a 90 from 1985 does indeed need a spring to return the clutch pedal or is it likely to be something else that is preventing it from returning fully hence causing the slipping?

I was trying to avoid taking it apart until I had an idea what I was likely to need to replace, so that I have new parts to hand where I need them...

Thanks Buster - I did a search before posting but didn't find your clutch photo guides for some reason, however, after posting last comment I decided to go and have a look in your section and found both the Clutch MC replacement and clutch pedal box removal threads which are just what the doctor ordered!

These guides are invaluable to the novice mechanic like me and I'd just like to convey my thanks for you taking the time to put them together - it's much appreciated

I reckon it's best that I take the whole pedal box out for a good clean up and then I can replace the spring I'm about to order.

Aye, nae wurries

So, I ordered one of the springs from lrseries.com as per the link from buster and when I went to fit it at the weekend it became aparrent that the new spring is about an inch too long. The spring that was sent is about 4 inches long as I believe was described on the ordering page but it's obviously not the right thing for my 90 pedal box.

Decided to get into the engine bay and open up the back of the pedal box to do some oiling but that hasn't helped. Tried bleeding the clutch but that came through good and clear and hasn't helped either.

Having felt the stiffness of the master cylinder (replaced a year ago) when pulling the pedal back up I don't think a spring is going to be strong enough anyway.

It needs to be teased back up about half an inch each time the pedal is depressed.

So, two things:
1. Can someone help me with a link to the right clutch return spring for a 1985 90?
2. Is it likely that something in the innards of the clutch itself has broken causing the unwillingness to return the pedal?

I certainly can't be taking the engine out to replace the clutch so it's going to be £££ for Challenger 4x4 if there is no easy fix :-(

Not sure which one ye ordered, but just to put me mind at ease ah've just measured both me springs. The 110 spring is 4" (measurin' the coils only) and the 90 is 3 1/2 " (measurin' coils only).
When ye ordered the spring, did ye say what it was for?

Just a thought... Have ye adjusted the nuts on the push rod and also the bolt stickin' out the box yet?

Wasn't sure what impact playing with those would have so I just took the plate off the box by removing the six screws, checked inside was clean, loosened the pedal shaft nut on right side of box to work some oil into the bearing, tightened the nut back up and found that this hadn't helped at all.

I presumed that the bolt on the lower front of the box would reduce how far the pedal could be depressed? Since there hasn't been a problem with disengaging the clutch I left it alone.

What would change if I moved the pushrod nuts and how?
