Hello all, I have noticed when my 1999 defender TD5 is driving at low revs, (as in trundlong along in traffic just before you would normally change down a gear) the engine misfires. Also, its not the clunking of the transmission you get when you are in too high a gear. She has a definate, slight missfire, a bit like a petrol engine would, if it had a dodgy plug. If I put the throttle down, the missfire stops. Any Ideas before it gets worse please? Thank you.

That did cross my mind I have been told they are prone to go. I just don't know what the symptoms are when they do. Thanks.

take the red plug off the ecu, if there is oil present the injector loom needs replacing, the ecu is under the drivers seat

Thanks, I will look in the morning. If the ecu is under the drivers seat, how would oil get to that? Can it seep through the cable?

The loom and wires for the injectors are inside the cylinder head, and oil can find its way down the inside of the wiring loom and into the ECU which causes an issue. Common fault and parts not too dear but the ECU needs cleaning out if it is really oily. Best do some searches.

Hi again guys, and thanks for your advice. I sent this message to johnlad too. I looked at the red ecu plug under the seat. It was bone dry. I am a bit confused how oil would get there. It goes from the engine bay, under the tunnel, up the loom. The outer loom casing stops with 3 inches of loose wires to the red ecu plug. The plug was dry. So am I right to asume its not the injector loom? Thanks again for any advise.. Ian....

if no oil present, then probably best to get it plugged into a Land Rover diagnostic to have any fault codes read
