Hey Guys,

need a bit of advice if possible.

I have a freelander td4 s. and I have been having trouble with the clutch biting really low.

We bled it out twice now which improves the situation for smooth gear changes and biting alot higher up.

there is obviously a leak in the slave which I believe is inside the gearbox?

Does anybody know how much the parts are to replace this, or is it best to replace the master and slave at the same time?

I need an idea of cost and if anyone knows any garages local to manchester, bolton, bury area that could do this?

Cheers

Ryan

Guy I know has recently had the slave cylinder go. He had the use of a lift but it was still a pain of a job for him. There is a lot of stuff to come of before you get the gearbox out, because of the hassle he not only replaced the slave cylinder but also replaced the clutch and the dual mass flywheel. He couldn't stand the thought of having it to bits again. The parts came to around £600. If you have it done you would be looking at around £400-£500 labour.

Approx
Slave £50
Clutch £100
Dual mass flywheel £350
Bracket mount thing for slave £20
Fluid £10
Labour £300

So between £650 and £800 from an independent - double it from LR!

No point skimping on parts it's a big labour job so change clutch and flywheel at the same time.

Its had a new clutch in the last few months actually, so theres nothing up with that, its literally just the slave cylinder as far as I know.

So how much would i be looking for labour for that?

Can anyone reccomend anywhere local to me as im not going to attempt this myself.

If it had a clutch recently and the garage did not recommend changing the other bits they are out to rip you off.

Cost of labour for slave - just about the same as for all - gearbox and IRD have to come off. It's mad they didn't do it - I would try haggling saying they should have done the full job!

are you sure its not the master cylinder that is the problem, as it would be unusual if they did not fit a new slave when you had the clutch done.

6.7 hours to change it.

Mine was £752 but that also included new propshaft bearings.

It's a swine of a job to do.

seems like its going to be an expensive job, and until somebody looks at it I can't confirm 100% that its the slave, it's just with what i've read and bleeding it which seems to temporarily fix it, means there is air getting in somewhere.

Unless anybody has any other suggestions?

If fluid is dripping out the gearbox your slave is gone. That's what mine was doing.

Also the master could be giving you issues.

Get your wallet braced as this is going to cost you, it could be when you got the clutch changed the slave was damaged or a line to it got damaged.

Until you take it and get it checked we can only guess at what's up with it.

What we found when we bled it that the tube going into the gearbox was spinning when tightening up the bleeding nipple, I wonder if they have just not put it back together properly?

Its still paying someone to take everything apart to find out what it is.

So I am looking at £50 for the part + labour which is going to be a few hundred easy...

Sounds likely, i found out that when mine was taken apart and rebuilt, they only fitted 2 of the 3 starter motor bolts.

Im afraid ive no more info i can share as mine was recovered on a low loader as the prop bearing had collapsed and anything over 25mph had the prop banging away.
Warrenty direct picked up my bill as well. :)

Good luck with it.

Cheers, I will keep you updated, my brothers going to speak to a good friend of his tomorrow who has a garage and does alot of this type of work. Time to get a price ;(

We've just had to get clutch, slave and master done. FOOKIN' EXPENSIVE.
I also go the main service at the same time just to batter the card properly in January.

The pedal was going sstraight to the floor and RAC said the fluid was going somewhere in the box.
When the garage called to ask if the clutch had been judderring before the proble, I said no as it was a sudden failure. He then called me back after they had the thing apart and said they wouldn't need to replace the flywheel as there was no hot spots on it (Not a LR specialist but the Mech who did the job has 2 FL of his own) Saving me bit thank the lord.

The question I have is, has the part been redesigned?

Hotspots are not the only sign of wear - the DMF has a complex spring type system in it that becomes weak and sloppy - it would show up in drive take up being a bit clunky perhaps.

Got it all fixed and sorted now the part cost me £50 and £200 for the fitting, nice job done everything is perfect now it's going in gear smooth and setting off perfect.

Now to fix my leaky boot...

In January I had to replace the slave cylinder of my 2003 Td4.
But now after a few month and 8000 km I have to fill the master cylinder every 2 weeks
and the gear shifting it not smoothly at all.
At most partshops they have original FL stuff and cheaper after market stuff.
The original slave cylinder is over 120 Pounds and the after market between 40 and 50 Pounds. Is there anyone here who has done over 100.00 miles with an after market slave unit?
My original LR slave unit was defect after 186.000 km, which is far too soon fur such a expensive car. (my previuos VW Passat TDI had done 400.000km with the same original slave unit)

Not sure about slaves but I have managed 21,000 miles and 4,000 miles on 2 separate cheap master cylinders. I bought a genuine one in February for £137 and got it fitted.
The slave is a cheap part and I'm expecting it to pack in as the master/slave go done at the same time and the master did 21k before bowing out.

Cheap parts are cheap for a reason, sadly.

For the peace of mind, I would go genuine.
