A quick story

I live in Bulgaria

I recently bought a 1989 110 with a 200tdi discovery engine in the UK. I mainly bought it for the engine etc as the TD in my ex military 110 had gone bang. As it turns out it is a lot better than I thought and have decided to run that and use my ex military for parts but that is another story.

Anyway back to the plot - I decided to have the cam belt, altanator and power steering belts changed as there was no history and having picked the truck up from Yorkshire I decided to have "experts" do it so took it to Simmonites.

£150 for the cambelt which I did not think that was too bad. I mentioned it was just about to drive 2000 miles across Europe and the owner said "do you want me to give her a check over and see if there is anything serious for the trip" to this I obviously said yes - could not see any problem in having a check over done.

Any way picked the truck up £150 for the cambelt and they charged me £180ish for checking it over (3 hours work) finding lots of exciting things like:

brake rubber worn
Door straps missing
gearbox oil leak (it is spotting)
etc
etc
etc

Anyway a two page list!!!!!

What was really annoying was the attitude of the lady at the reception. " i would not be taking that land rover any where - let alone across Europe"

Promptly set off on the trip. 48 hours later completed with only one breakdown!

When they replaced the altanator belt they did not tighten up the bolts and it shed the belt and lost the bolt.

Luckily I had a spare belt and managed to nick a bolt off the sankey trailer I was towing and back on the road in 20 minutes.

I don't get upset at mistakes but I do with the attitude

Wont be going back there in a hurry!!!!!!

maybe the lady on reception replaced the alt, and had remembered she'd not tightened it up correctly ?

You should have gone to Jake Wrights in Burley - about 25 minutes way from Simmonites. Simmonites get a bad name locally, and I think I know which cow you're referring to on the reception. She was a total bag to me on the phone when I was looking for land rovers about three years ago. Try this lot if you're ever over here in Yorkshire again - Landrover restoration and sales - Yorkshire, uk

never had so many replies so quickly!!!

Will try the other place next time

They have customers all over the world. John (the manager) has also been known to drive Land Rovers from Europe back to England. If I remember correctly (I might be totally off) he drove either two or three back from Europe, which he stripped down and sent to America / Canada.
