Silly question time...........

Hello all,

After a few searches, and plenty of thinking, and some different answers; some silly questions, sorry;

96' 300tdi 110

1. What's the best oil for engine/gearbox/transfer box?
2. Tools to carry for a brief overland journey, I've probably got as much as I can, but I'm sure there is something that I haven't.
3. Checking oil level, engine temp in 300tdi, but what about a 2.5 td?

I'm sure there will be more, but thanks for any help.
Cheers, Mark

Engine: 10W40 or 15W40, cheapest oil you can find.
Gearbox: ATF to Ford standard M2C33
Xfer box: EP90 (AKA SAE80/90) Hypoid Gear Oil

Tools... Well... A good socket, spanner, screwdriver set, hammer, gaffa tape, WD40, instant gasket. Saw. Chisel.
An a couple of other bits. Much else an your gettin into serious rebuild kinda gear. Thats my thoughts, but ive never done an overland trip mesen. Not yet.

Checking oil? Whenever really, cold is best i guess but leave it at least 10 minutes from switchoff to let it settle back into the sump.

Boydy!

Many thx Boydy.

I agree with you on the engine, but I've heard you should use semi-synthetic.
gearbox; like you I thought ATF, but handbook says MTF.
yes and thx, ep90 for other things.

Thx again, after searching forums for months and buying several books, I got more tools than I probably need, but there's always something that people find useful.

thx again.

MTF94 for the R380 box. its not expensive. its £22 for 5l at a indi dealer. seeing as its changed every 24k i personally think its worth it.

when you say short duration overland, where are you going? makes a big difference to what you take with you.

4 weeks solo in Morocco:

TOOLS: 32mm flat spanner for removing fan. torx55 bit for refilling your R380. ball joint seperator, hub spanner then all your usual stuff. 1/2drive socket set, 1/4socket set, hacksaw, hammer(s) :) spare blades, screw driver set. big (dogkiller) screwdriver, chisels, spanner set, ratchet spanners, mole grips, pliers, wire cutters, pipe wrench, zip ties, chemical metal, epoxy resin. silicone sealant, gapper tape, rescue tape, latex gloves. tub of bolts (M6/M8/M10/M12) and nuts (nyloc), superglue, evo stick, crimping tool, terminals, wire, relays, insulating tape. clear hose, syringe, grease gun.

All in a tool box with socket sets behind front seats.

SPARES: replace old stuff and take as spares. then you know the old and new stuff fits. I took:- spare filters 1 of each, hub bearingsx2, lock tabs and gaskets, UJ'sx2 flexi brake hoses, radiator bottom hose, bypass hoses, fan belt.

FLUIDS: 4 litres EP90, 3 litres engine oil, 3 litres of coolant (conc.) 2.5l dot4, 2 litres of MTF94. also copper slip, marine grade grease, WD40 and a grease gun.

you will prob find you use your tools for fixing other things other than problems. I used most of mine fixing a crap plastic inspection lamp (got it working again!) and general tightning of things. when we did have a problem i STILL didnt have what i needed :(

oil cooler pipe rattled lose and i lost 6 litres of engine oil. other than that, i had a slightly loose rear hub bearing which we nipped up.

If your venturing off tarmac onto unsealed roads, i suggest you make a routine of vehicle checks each eve. oil/fluid levels, wheel nuts, lights, air filter (if dusty enviro) and any accessories you have bolted on. a fully loaded vehicle over rough or corragated ground takes a lot more stress than you subject it to here in the UK. would you rather tighten your wheel nuts each night or spend 2 days trying to source wheel studs? preventive maintenence. I carried out these checks every night (if not on tarmac roads) whilst Lisa cooked food or sorted out the roof tent. does not take long.
depends on your destination i suppose.

hope this helps

many thx again for all the info, great stuff!

MTF94 oil, thx, thought it was Man trans oil, thx again boydy.

griff, great info, thx. possibly 4/6 weeks N Africa it will be solo, probably by myself, and you've given me so many points, I'll go through them all and get back to you, if I may with any queries.

thx again, mark

Selfish sexist swine ... you should have let Lisa do those easy bits, and you could have done the tricky stuff and made the dinner and fixed the tent.
