Now its cold i have found the heating very ineffcient.

I have a p reg 300 auto tdi.

Have checked haynes book and looks very complicated does anyone kno easy fix possibilties.
I am trying to avoid taking out the heating element.

take your viscious fan off the engine, should make it a bit warmer for ya. change your thermostat, could be jammed open

Not the theromstat that is working correctly thanks.

not sure about removing fan i live in london and you never know when the traffic jam will call.

do a search on here m8, loads o peeps do it, the engine is grossly overcooled.
you could always make a radiator blind up and cover half the rad. quick, easy and if it does get too hot you can always just rip it off.

Can you describe what exactly is wrong with the heater, is it just blowing cold air on both sides even when engine is hot?
How do you know the engine is fully up to temperature?
What does temperature gauge read?
Have you checked the engine coolant level at the plastic bung on top of the thermostat housing?
If you do take the viscous fan off I wouldn't worry about the engine overheating at this time of year, provided everything is as it should be.
My fan is off, the engine will idle all day without overheating even after a motorway run.

The most obvious check would be the coolant level, the heater matrix is usually the first sign of coolant loss. Don't use the expansion tank to check the level, Sqeeze the hoses and as said earlier check at the cap on the thermostat housing. I have a p reg tdi, it lost less than a litre of coolant, enough to loose the cabin heat.
