Well, I have patched my sills up enough - the last being a couple of days ago in the hope it will get through its MOT - retest tomorrow....

So now looking to cut out the sills and replace with box section - this was the plan last summer, but we never got one

Anyways, my local Steel place can get 100mm x 60mm x 3.5mm box section for £79.20 (inc VAT) - which comes in a 7.5m length!

Anyone near Bath / Bristol / Somerset area fancy going halfs on the box section for their sills to help with costs? as this gives 4 equal lengths of 1.87m (ample with a bit spare for the sides as I think they only need 1.4m ish?)

Cheapest I have seen for 2x 1.4m sections that are only 3mm thick on likes of fleabay etc is more than £50.00!!

why how thick are your sills just now....not very if theres holes in them. :)

Would you not be better with some thiner box to save weight.

Was just trying to state that this option you are getting slightly thicker/better steel at a cheaper price - less than £40.00 for both sides ;)

As for my sills - touché :D but that doesn't mean I have to replace them for thin stuff again to rot, and as for making it lighter, can't really imagine that 2 box sections will shave that many milliseconds off my already dire acceleration....after all its a 2.5 tonne brick that aint built for speed but for purpose ;)

I would if I was closer mate as think I will need my sills doing next year based on this years advisories...
Sadly for the cost of getting to each other we could each buy one!
Anything else imaginative you could use the spare for..?

Bought this for mine.

.5mm thicker than the chassis.go too thick and you will struggle to weld thin to thick with decent penetration.

I had seen that - hence where I got the £50 odd quote from.

Hopefully I might have a taker to come in halfs with me on the one I can get from local Steel place. If not I am wondering what I can make with the remainder - maybe a HD rear bumper? At least I would have enough spare to play with :D

I should be able to weld up to 3.5mm ok without any real issue.....hopefully!

But will see what the other forum member says first before I order and get playing, but in a happier mood now its passed the MOT retest :D

I used 5mm on mine because the guy had it sitting as an off cut! That was one serious sill and that was after spending about £115 on the proper parts to make up the NS - found it to be shoddy, didn't fit and generally was a real nuisance.

Stu... m'interested!!

Will check wiv SWMBO tonight about speculative spending what wiv all the spends we've got coming up in the next few weeks/months.

Can't see it being a problem mind as I usually get me own way on landy stuff as I do it regardless of the official nod!

Thing is if I happen on some gratis - it'll find its way to FiL's garage and get liberated for something to do wiv his house, donated to the scrap pile or lost.

If I pay for it - it'll sit in the front room, SWMBO will moan like buggery and it'll be sorted and welderised by my brother in law, in a matter of days of the moanage starting.

Ok, let me know when its all good and i can nip and get some....strike whilst the iron is hot and all that :D

SWMBO's words on the subject - You're not having anymore bits for that bloody land rover until you shifts the crap that's all over the house.

I guess that's me sills on the back burner until absolutely necessary ie MOT failure time :(

Sorry Stu!

No worries...have to go for the easy life and keep the other half happy ;)

Hopefully someone else will come along as unfortunately i don't have too many options when it comes to steel suppliers.....a bit scarce round my neck of the woods unfortunately

Just thought I would resurrect this thread, as was out at the weekend have a mooch underneath and found another hole in my sill, after a bit of prodding the little hole turned into over a foot long!

Have welded and patched it up, but really need to cut them all out and replace with box section, so thought I would see if there are any new takers fancying going half’s to get this done proper?
