Side steps and rock sliders...

i cannot believe i'll ever want bigger tyres to be honest... this is my day to day vehicle, which I drive to work and back in as well... bigger tyres would make the journey even more impossible!

On that basis, and on the basis that I just took off my plastic trims (and the ends are closed), normal length rock sliders should be just fine :D

ok, the distance between the back of the front wheel arch and the front of the rear arch on my standard, non modified vehicle is 170.5cm / 67 1/8 inches.

This appears to be longer than every other vehicle that measurements have been given for. Presumably this is because the other vehicles have been modified.

So... I have 145/75R16 tyres and a 2" lift. According to "http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f38/discovery-fitting-bigger-wheels-67858.html", I should cut the back of the rear arch. This has never been done, but it's irrelevant as far as the rock sliders are concerned.

How long are regular bars/sliders? I'm struggling to find any dimensions on eBay...
standard disco is 1700mm i make em 1680 10mm eather end shorter and ther cut at a 120deg angle which also helps

does anyone have measurement and drawings for sliders as i'd like to have a go at making my own before i buy them

i wanted measurements for the parts that fasten to the chassis i know how the sliders fit on the 90's but wondered about discos that all

well...

there's folk who know what the measurements are, but thats cos they sell the sliders mate

i wouldnt expect someone whose business is fabricating these bits to give away the measurements.

but maybe they will.

cheers

right... i'm resurrecting this old thread for a moment!

i think i'm going to go ahead and buy some rock sliders/tree bars at last. The question is...

Chassis mount or Sill mount?

My understanding is...

Chassis mount - harder to fit, stronger, bottom of sill and inside of sill visible and open to the elements.

Sill mount - easy to fit, weaker, entire sill encased within slider mounting bracket.

So... from someone who has fitted them and/or user them, which type would you recommend and why??

I finally decided my steps were past their sell by date.
Managed to pick up a 2nd hand set which use (havent offered up yet) the same fixings as the original side steps (I didn't remove their brackets).

Only paid £25, so worth a go if not may try to modify them. I'm hoping to fit them on Sunday so you can take a look then.
I'll post some pictures including fittings once fitted.
Buy cheap, buy......... well fingers crossed!

i had the sill mount type and never had a problem, protected many a time and even jacked my disco using them at times. Mine were drilled and bolted right through the sill.

sounds very promising :)

Given what i'll be doing (nothing too extreme), I think sill-mounted will be perfect, so sill-mounted it is!

Plus, they're one hell of a lot easier to mount! :D

my sills are in pretty damn good shape to be honest... it was waxoyl'd in the past, and i've waxoyl'd it again.

there was some light surface rust which my wire brush got rid of with ease, and other than that, they're almost new... somehow!

yeah thats it fish, id always say chassis and sill if youre off roading heavily, but if its light use and your sills are 100% then you should be fine

look at all the guys driving round standard cars, the sills can take a fair bit of weight, and the sliders only help to spread it out

cheers
